Clutch Questions (EXEDY vs OEM) and more

Hello All,

My clutch is dead at about 110K. I am currently debating if to replace it with another OEM clutch or a Stage 1 EXEDY clutch.

I was never impressed with the OEM clutch (felt it could use a little bit more grip).

How is the feel of the EXEDY Stage 1 clutch vs. the OEM one? How about the pedal feel (how much stiffer is it)?

The reason I ask is because we purchased another vehicle and my wife will probably be driving this one more often now. If the pedal is too stiff I will probably go with the OEM, however if the feel/stiffness is minor I will probably upgrade to the EXEDY clutch.

While I have the drive shafts and clutch out, I am planning on replacing the oil seals. Is there anything else anybody can think of that should be replaced while everything is apart?

Parts/To do:
---------
Resurface Flywheel
Clutch disc
Pressure plate
Throw out bearing
Pilot shaft bearing
Alignment tool

Rear main seal
Half-moon gaskets

Is there any specialty tools (or any tool that will make life easier) while taking on this job?

How long should I expect this project to take (I have read as long as 15 hrs)?

I would appreciate any tips anyone might have!

Thanks in advance for any assistance/input anyone might give.

Best Regards,
Gavin

You have it covered. BTW. The REAL OEM stock clutch is probably your best bet if the wife is going to drive it. Exedy is supposed to fine also though. If you experienced slipping on the stocker, you probably got a Key Value clutch kit(it crap even though it's available from Nissan)

Do a search on clutch and key value clutch kits.

Also look at the stickies above. There is a chilton's online that goes over the clutch replacement process.

Please do a search first, detail what you've found and THEN ask the question. Thanks

Thats all well and good, but where can i get an EXEDY stage 1 clutch kit? Considering the group deal has end quite a while back, is there an online dealer that sells them for a simaler price?

Ok, i am currently running an Exedy Stage 1 organic kit, so i can tell ya from experience how it is. If you plan on doing any major mods, such as nitrous, S/C, turbo, where you need a clutch to grab, this is a good one to use. However, i cannot tell the difference between this clutch and my OEM clutch as far as drivability. They grab at about the same point (Exedy slightly lower), and it grabs the gear about as hard as stock. Now, when you start romping on it, it can get a lil scary at first, since it does grab so hard when pushed. When i do a WOT 1-2 shift (spraying or not), the dash jolts and the tires break loose momentarily, surprised me anyways.

Also, you can contact MaxxTuning (also their org name) in new york and they should be able to get it to you for about 282-283 bucks. Great people and great service...

Thanks Eric.
I think i will get the stage 1 exedy seeing as how you have had good experiances both performance wise and driveability wise. I am glad to hear the performance is noticable from stock, because i found an ACT clutch kit too expensive, and all other stock replacement clutches to be too stock......Thanks again. BTW do you have the part numbers of the kit you bought and the part numbers of the separete peices within the kit?

Umm, i did some researching, the clutch kit number is 06803A, and i dont have the seperate part numbers as everything came that was needed. I did some looking around again, and i couldnt find a clutch other than from MaxxTunning that was under 285 bucks shipped. Enjoy the Exedy and keep me posted....
