DIY or shop?: "intake cleaning, fuel inj."

just got my oil changed at a shop (don't have time this week to do it myself) and the guy said my intake needs to be cleaned, along with the fuel injection.

by intake cleaning, does he mean throttle body cleaning, or is there more to it??

and does anyone have a link to fuel injection cleaning?

thanks.

take a look at the haynes manual. i seem to recall there is some warning about cleaning the TB. seems like there is a "anti-sludge" coating that isn't supposed to be removed.

just curious...how did he "know" to "think" that the FI's were "dirty"?

good question. i didn't know to ask at the time. he was just doing an oil change, and he said that he would have to get in there to know for sure if it all needed to be done.

i guess i'll clean the TB, replace plugs, and replace the fuel filter. maybe even run some techron through the beast.

i just bought the car, its got 105k on it, so this stuff should be done anyway.

Hesitation

Does you RPM hesitate when idling? That's the only way I can think of as to why he would recommend you need a FI cleaning. I got a 0115 code (air/fuel mixture lean). I just got a Fuel system cleaning from a Express Lube for 59.99. Nissan wanted $100 to do the same process. It's some 3 phase process where they clean your TB, dump detergent in your gas tank, and pressurize the injectors or something like that. It definitely works! I also changed my fuel filter and pcv valve. The left over gas in the fuel filter was dingy brown and the pcv valve was clogged with black grime. I've got to change my Sparks sometime soon. I've got 138,000 miles.

He could mean the intake plenums right after the TB. I had mine done by hand and it made a world of difference at 85K miles. First I removed my TB myself and cleaned that but once it was off I really saw the gunk buildup on the intake manifold.

Oh, and I also endorse the professional fuel system cleaning methods like jt151 mentioned. I do a Motorvac every 24 months or so in additional to running 1oz Redline in my tank every fill.

I can't seem to post the picture from Cardomain at the moment of my plenums...
