1996 Maxmima Odometer Problem

I am hoping someone can answer something for me.

First off, I am kind of a novice when it comes to cars. I currently have 1996 Maxima, and about 9 months ago the Odometer stopped working. Can this be fixed, and if so, does anyone have any idea how much it costs to fix?

Also, once a cars odometer stops working, is it possible to find out exactly how many miles are on it (Internal Odmoter, etc....)?

I was trying to get somethine else fixed the other day, the shop basicly told me that I couldn't find out what the actual miles were, and that if I ever wanted to sell it legally, all I could get for it would be Wholesale.

Is this guy basicly lying to me?

Basicly, yes. I travel for my job, and I only drive the car about 400 - 500 mile a month. I just never had to time to bring it in.

I dont think there is any way to pull the miles back. I do know that you can replace the speedo and the odometer but the mileage will be off, really off since your odometer is already dead.

No way to get the mileage other than the odometer.
my odometer died, tach started to bounce and fuel gage never read too high , dealer wanted aroung $450 for a gauge cluster.
I got a cluster for $105 from a junk yard.
Basicaly the spedometer in a 95-96 cars is electronicaly ran but the odometer consists of a motor on the spedo circuit board that runs it and sometimes the gears can freze up conne4ctions can go bad and the motor cand die. All of which hapened to me, it took me a long time to fix and i broke my origional speedo in the process and I went to school for electronics.

all i can suggest is go to a junkyard, try ebay or online and get a new one cheap. then roughly try to add up the mileage you've done. maybe figure out with gas receipts if you care that much, and add as much as you honestly think you put on. that part is up to you. but don't rip someone off by not adding atleast some mileage if you plan on selling the car. goodluck!
