Removal of rear hub dust caps

Is the assembly of the rear hubs (from cotter pin in) the same as the fronts? I've read a couple people in here saying that running with these caps expose the rear wheel bearings to grit. If the assemblies of the rears and the fronts, which don't have the caps, are the same, then grit shouldn't be an issue. So is there anything different about the rears?

Thanks.
