2nd gear problem

I've got 228k on the original tranny for my 5-spd. Lately, the 2nd gear has been giving me trouble. Even with the clutch pedal pushed in, it still grinds when sliding into the gear. Sometimes (albeit still rarely), the shifter just pops out of gear for no apparent reason. This doesn't happen all the time though.

And I also hear a whirring sound when driving in 1st gear.

You guys think my tranny is letting go? Or is it just reagular maintenance like gear oil?

I think you're luck to get that much mileage out of a 4th gen 5SPD

if the tranny is grinding going into gear, its probably the synchros that is not up to par. as a temporary solution, double clutch and rev match all your shifts.

How much would that cost to replace? Do they need to open up the tranny?
