Knock sensor question

Would the "check engine" warning always light up if something is wrong with the knock sensor? I'm asking this because I've seen many posts where people said that everything was fine with their car but it just hesitated at low speeds, and then people recommend checking the knock sensor (although "check engine" wasn't lit up).

A KS NEVER EVER sets off the CEL by itself. Only when other codes are present. To set the light off by itself you have to actually check for codes and even then the code might not pop up...

So basically if you suspect that your ks is broken, you should check if your
ECU is throwing the 0304 code even though the CEL is not set off?

If your knock sensor is bad, you'll have trouble out-running 4-cylinder Accords and your mileage will suck. The nice hump in the torque curve at 3400 rpm will also feel flat.

If your knock sensor is good, the engine will be very zippy and responsive, and your mileage will be excellent also. The hump in the torque curve at 3400 rpm will be very noticeable, and no problems with leaving 4-cylinder Accords.

I'm getting a knock sensor code but my mileage is great! My car seems to be quick but I've only had it a few months so i don't know what it's supposed to do.Do you think my knock sensor is OK?I got the code combined with a front O2 sensor code and i replaced it.

So are you telling me there's no definite way you can know if your ks is broken? When do they usually go bad?

The ONLY real way is to disconnect it and drive like that for a few days. If you feel a huge difference then it's good. If there is no difference then it's bad...

there's some that go for pretty cheap on ebay if you look at the right times, otherwise you can get one at normal cost (probably about $160 or so) from your nissan dealer.

um... race a school bus, if he beats you off the line, your KS is broken. =p

seriously though, it's a huge loss in low end power, you're gonna notice it sooner or later... it's not rocket science.
when my friend's '94 lumina took me off the line, and I started getting 12mpg, I suspected something. once I got the cash together, I got the KS replaced, I'm now getting 400+ miles to a full tank, and I beat my friend's '03 RSX 6spd two out of three times last night.

so don't be stingy people, get the damn thing replaced, and thank us later.

Hmm, everybody says this about low RPM's. I don't really notice it all that much in the low, but mostly in the highs, after 3500RPM. Still think its a KS???

How does it feel?? I think nothing changed with my car, maybe I am wrong. I am suspicius because can't get any resistance readings from harness pins and my ECU throws 0505, everything's fine. So if harness would be cracked somewhere then ECU would not be able to get readings from sensor and would throw a code (0304). What do you guys think??

Apparently you can't tell if it's bad unless you have a 4-cyl Accord based on what someone said. *lol*

I heard that if it's bad, the ecu will use a table in its rom or whatever, so no matter what petrol you use, it assumes its 87 octane. And apparently the ecu will not revert back until the sensor is replaced.

My guess is when a part has failed, there has to be some certain event where the vehicle doesn't run properly. Just look at that EVAP problem which is common--people drive years without fixing it, yet their mileage is fine. CAr just doesn't start properly.

I cant get a reading on the knock sensor at the connector either? Whats going on? Can someone please confirm that there should be a reading there? And what if there is no reading and no codes in computer?

Disconnect the knock sensor at the sub-harness connector.
On VG30E engines, check the continuity between terminal A and B. Continuity should exist.
On VE30DE and VQ30DE engines, check the continuity between terminal A and ground. Continuity should exist.

It is necessary to use an ohmmeter which can measure more than 10 megaohms.
