high idle after throttle body cleaning...help

Hello,
I did a search but couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for.

I cleaned my throttle body out last week by removing the intake and MAF and while the car was running rough, I sprayed in throttle cleaner and cleaned it out really good.

I had to reset my codes because the intake was off when doing the cleaning.

Now when I start the car (when cold) the rpms jump to about 2200 and then drop to about 1500 then go back up to about 2000 and seems to fluctuated a few times before settling at about 1500 till the engine warms up.
Now my idle runs at about 900rpms while the engine is warm and won't go down at all.
I have a 99 5speed and know the idle should be about 650rpm.

Is there anything I can do to lower the idle back to where it should be?

I should also mention that when I cleaned the throttle body two years ago it didn't do this at all.

If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

after TB cleaned you shouild adjust the idle...from the IAC. Its easy just check the idle(rpms) and then the computer will to the rest.

Thanks for the reply.
But I have a question. How do I adjust the idle from the IAC? Is it from the black **** (screw) on top?

(been awhile, but here you go) Unplug your TPS(throttle position sensor), start the car, rev to 3k rpm at least once, let idle for one minute, adjust idle as needed by turning the black plastic screw on the IACV(loosen will raise idle, tighten will lower idle), which is next to the throttle body with all the vacuum lines coming from it. Turn your car off, plug the TPS(wiring harness on the throttle body by the way), start your car, rev to 3k rpm at least once again and let it idle for a minute or until it becomes stable.

yeah, I did get the light and that's why I had to reset the codes. I did that and the light went off but the rpms were still high.
Last night I did what Cullen said and it's much better now. Seems to run better.

How did you reset the codes?

Next to the gas pedal(right side)there is a black plastic kick plate with two plastic screws(be careful not to break the screws). Take the kick plate off and viola...there is your ecu. There will be a clear sticker with directions on it. It will tell you how to reset the ecu. Just use a VERY small flat head to turn the screw. It's really easy and hard to screw up so go for it

I hope you didn't let the car run with the filter out of place. The crap that got in there will mess you up sooner or later. To clean the TB YOU DON'T HAVE TO REMOVE ANYTHING. All you do is loosen the accordion section and slip a straw through there and sparay away. What you did was wrong. If you were cleaning it with a rag or something the the engine doesn't need to be on. The engine never has to be on when cleaning the TB...

True, but if you are **** about it like me, after you clean the TB, with all the intake plumbing in tac: locate a vacuum line on the iacv, remove it(stick your finger on the hole to make sure it is sucking and not blowing), and start the car and spray the TB cleaner in that hole. I had to check a few lines to find one that was drawing air in, and did not cause the engine to stall while running.

I have more or less the exact same symptoms and the mechanic did run the car with the TB exposed for a minute or two, reving it pretty hard in the meantime. I was getting a bit nervous when the car wouldn't start after two cranks but he said it was normal and it started after a struggle on the third try. This was when the filter was off and before he revved it.

Should I just go back and ask him to adjust my idle or did he do permanent damage?

Symptoms:
1. Car idles when warm at around 900
2. When driving and throwing it in neutral, the RPM's will jump up to 1,500 and then drop to idle. Sometimes it sticks around at around 1,500 for a few seconds and then gradually drops to 900.
And yes, I just brought this thread back from the dead...

sometimes if the light is on and you just made adjustments ride around for about a week or so and see if the ECU resets itself *relearns* ... but check the codes first to see what it is telling you to make sure. Even when u reset the code, the computer is in a learning mode and it wont be ready for a while.

I get no CEL. This is all that happens: The car revs to about 2K, and goes down to around 1.5 and eventually 900 when it is warm. When driving and I throw it into neutral, the RPMS jump to 1,500 and sometimes stay there for a few secs before coming down to about 900.

i did a throttle body cleaning (i took the throttle body off) i got 1000-1200 idle which was odd.
i adjusted the throttle with the adjustment screw, but it only adjusted to 900 or so...

the throttle cable was out of adjustment!

after giving the cable slack, it went down to 700
