Clutch is Soft; Can't Shift

I can't shift into gear on my 96 Max SE. Basically there is no sort of pressure when I step on the clutch and it will just stay pressed down against the floor mat. However, once it's down I'm not able to switch gears. This obviously presents a problem and I'd like to have some sort of idea what it could be before I bring it in the this afternoon to the shop. Could it be the clutch cable is bad? Please advise

isnt the internet great.....just think, 10 years ago, you would have just kept a tube of KY next to your wallet when you took the car to the shop.

Now you have peeps you can ask and get a closer idea to the problem.

clutch is disengaged via a fluid system in the Max.. if your fluid leaks out theen you have no pressure to move the pedal back.. i'd like to say it is as easy as putting new fluid in but it is not.. You need to find the leak.. 50% of the time is the slave cylinder located on the tranny and 50% of the time it is the master on the firewall in the engine bay. They are cheap parts and the slave is easier to change so hope it is that.

I would check the level of your clutch fluid reserve. If its empty, fill it and bleed the clutch. That was all I had to do...

Thanks for all the responses. Did end up that the Master Cylinder and Slave Cylinders had to be replaced.
