Nope, it's a totally different engine. Geometries are totally different...the VQ30DE Maxima motor has a wider bore and shorter stroke than the VG30DE 300Z motor. The engines are pretty similar in a lot of regards (4 valves/cylinder, 3.0L, etc), but no, they're totally different.

Which 300ZX engine? That would help out as to whether you should post pics or not. If it is TT engine, then hells yes! That would be an AWESOME swap.

The guy has a 92, probably a VG30E, if so he probably is talking about the 84-89 300ZX, or "Z31." Obviously our maximas engines (VQ30DE) is different from 90-96 300ZX engines (VG30DE, or VG30DETT).

That's awesome...except you're in the wrong section. Go to the third gen section if you want to gloat about your VG swap.

VG30DETT fail. Anyway, it won't fit in a J30, most likely wouldn't fit in an A32 either (though I can't imagine a single reason anyone would want to swap the VQ out for one).

Oh, I didn't say it was a better engine. I just thought that it would be an interesting swap to see. I actually got on this site because I was interested in the VQ30. I am looking to swap one into a S13 coupe over the summer and was looking for more information (I haven't really searched for anything yet though) but I am extremely interested in the VQ30 and what it can do. I just like to see different engines in diferent cars. It makes me smile.

I would disagree on the fail comment. It is a very stout engine with good horsepower potential from the factory. However, it is big, heavy, hard to work on and expensive to get parts for. It is EXTREMELY hard to work on them in the Z32, let alone any other car it gets swapped into.

It gets both a fail and a win in the engineering, especially when in the Z32. Win for Nissan being able to design everything to fit in a relatively tight space, fail for it being the biggest PITA to work on.

But, I still say fail. There's so many cons about the engine that IMO there aren't enough pro's to balance it out.

I have been doing some reading up on it. I plan to run a Z33 6 speed mated up to it. I know that it is going to be difficult, but I'm not scared of some fab work!! From what I have found on Zilvia, it uses a similar block as the VQ35 (as long as it is the aluminum block) and will use the Z33 mounts as well. Fab work really isn't my specialty though (I think a blind 4 year old can weld cleaner than I can) but wiring is where I really shine.

I still have a lot of research to do, but I am not giving up on this one. I am a really big fan of the engine itself. Once I get the engine (4th gen Max's seem to be plentiful at the junkyard by my house), give it a good OEM rebuild then I will take it to my buddy's shop and really get dirty!
