my car 's a complete piece of sh*t!!
I've posted numberous topics about why my car is eating up so much gas and I get responses on gettin a tune up, changing the ks, check tire pressure, blah..blah...Did all these sh*t already and that f'g thing is still eating up like 11mpg...I would change the o2 sensor but the check engine is not lid......I'm ready to launch that f'g car off the cliff soon if I can't get this fixed!!
The mpg is that low because of the o2 sensor thats the first thing you gotta check. The light will not always come on if the o2 sensor is bad. Dont go by the cel light (if you really wanan know use a voltage meter) . If you have a meter check it with that or just change it any way and most likely that will fix your problem if not then its the ks.

Get a y-pipe and new front O2 sensors
Take off your intake manifold and clean the carbon deposits. Check the fuel injectors while you're at it
Make sure your knock sensor is working fine. Make sure your coil packs are fine.
A dent in the b-pipe can cause bad MPG?

This is one case where he could have done the work himself or with the help of a buddy. 02 sensor takes maybe 1 hour if it's your first time. 1/2 if you have done it before. .org has made many DIYers out of non-DIYers.

I agree, Lots of times the repairs arent too complicated. Its just that people get in the habit of just taking it to someone or get used to having people do the worlk for them. When you do maintence yourself its easier to pinpoint whats actually wrong with your car, being that you were the last person to work on it.
I guess I'll never understand why people ask car mechanical trouble shooting questions if they're not going to the do the work themselves. You can tell a mechanic what you think the problem is, but most of them will laugh at you and have their own opinion of the problem.
I think a lot of people must have a ****-load of money to burn because having someone else work on your car usually costs 3X-4X as much than just doing it yourself. With the amount of money people overpay, they could have a massive set of tools and do almost all the work themselves. With about $300 in tools and $100 in shop manuals, you cna do about 80% of your repairs in the driveway and in less than a day.

There are some things that we can do ourselves. Otheres aren't practical for me to do, such as CV joints. For example, I do not have a 36mm socket and my 1/2" breaker bar will not be able to generate enough torque to remove the bolt under the castle nut. But when I can get a look at the procedure, it gives me and others a heads-up on whether a job is worthwhile or not. NOBODY gave the correct procedure on correcting the EVAP control valve, canister, and boost sensor. With respect to this problem, a forum search turns up imho jerry-rigged solutions. I learned a lesson that cost me 2 hours that I could have better spent on the golf course.
Paying a pro to do stuff often makes sense, but sometimes it's better to DIY. Brakes are a no-brainer for the latter. Saving money is always a plus, but there are times when the pros do a much better job. Such as installing granite counter-tops, installing crown mouldings, putting in bay windows, marble floors, replacing sewer lines, etc. We can't be all things to all people. my .02

What is DIY is really different for people. To me anything but an Automatic tranmission rebuild or painting is DIY. Brakes/02/clutches/suspension/engine swapping etc.. is all DIY to me. Even a novice should be able to do brakes/02 sensor/ecu codes/basic trouble shooting. If this guy can't do DIY and can't find ONE decent mechanic, he shouldn't have a 8+ year old car. He should buy a cheap Hyundai with a 10 year warranty and be done with it

That was terrible. You can do better than that. You work 60hrs a week. Fine. You don't have 1 HOUR to change the 02? Fine. Then don't complain when mechanics screw up your car and charge up the ying yang for repairs.

I agree with the people saying to change your O2 sensor. I just changed my front right and I got a little over 300 miles per tank. Then I cleaned my throttle body and started to put 91 gas and then I got 330 roughly. Then my CEL came on saying that my front right O2 sensor and knock sensor was bad. So I fixed the front right O2 and the last tank I got 380 miles. But that was alot of freeway miles so I am going to give to a full fill ups and average it out. Changing the O2 sensor is probably the problem with your gas mileage.

Jeff is just trying to suggest that you should at least attempt to fix those problems yourself before you take it to a mechenic. If you love your car and want your car to last long, then please take some action.
Dont mind Jeff he just likes to pik on NooB's. You should check you ECU for problems, hey if anything just get rid of it like jeff said and get a Hyndai if you dont know what your doing. But anways just check your ECU
I pick on SOME newbies. Like the ones that expect everyone to answer their question w/o searching or the ones that think they know everything when they don't know anything. You see Homebody's post? He's a newbie. You see me getting on him? Hell no! Why not? Figure that out and maybe I wouldn't have to go to town on you all the time.
