transmission contoller?

I'm getting the code for the a/t transmission controller. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Is this a separate device, or something built into the ECU? I'd just like to know what this is going to involve, and whether it's worth getting fixed or just get another max. Thanks!

And to add to my concerns, there has been some red fluid around the wheel well (inside the engine bay) and I dont know if its tranny fluid or oil somehow coming off the K&N.

The A/T controller is a seperate unit. It's located in the console sort of to the left of the radio. You can see it if you look upwards from the gas pedal. Small silver box bolted to the side.
