Don't laugh
alright my dad has a 1996 Maxima with a failed thermostat, it failed a while ago, in the open position, and since we live in AZ we didn't mind, but now that winter has come we are looking to replace. And this is where the humor for us came in, WE CANNOT NOT FIND THE DAMN THING. Me, my dad, and both my grandpa's are American guys and don't work that much on imports and front tire spinners and we can't find the thermo, if someone could just tell us where it is and maybe how to replace it.
Please help I feel stupid and i don't like feeling stupid.

hmm Here is some pics of where it is. As you can see you have to remove that cover in order to get to the thermostat. The cover is held by 3 bolts which I indicated on that second pic.

Yes i come to a maxima forum just to post one question, frankly i don't really care for my dads maxima, sure its fast but it is too damn hard to work on, i was looking down there and that alternator would take at least an hour to change.
And Optimus you rock!!, thanks a ton!!!

Hard to work on? Are you kidding, it's a cinch. 95% of the bolts under the hood are 10mm or 12mm. When I had to change the alternator on my friend's Chevy Corsica, it took 6 bolts that were 4 different sizes, english AND metric. We still had it changed in 30 minutes in the AutoZone parking lot

Imports are a breeze compared to any domestic I have ever worked on.
Yeah don't even think taking that thing to the mechanic he will charge u like $70 for the labor. It takes like 5 minutes to replace, but it in the book it says like an hour. It took me 5 minutes. Costs $15 in autozone for the thermostat and buy some antifreeze. It's easier then changing your oil. Oh yeah the thermostat comes with the external housing. I was suprised
Hey i don't work on ***** corsicas, i work on big v-8s and v-6s, the alternator on those takes 2 bolts and two wires, it takes 30 seconds to get off and about a minute to get it back on, and i am not afraid to bruise my knuckles, i just spent a weekend on my back dropping the tranny out of my blazer without a lift, sure i assumed the thermo housing would be in the same spot but you can't see the thing until you know where to look

all this guy needs is a pic of a souped up max.
i bet u not only he gonna stay here but ud see threads by him askin how to do this mod and that mod
The man just wants an answer to his questions. Everybody is trying to convert him into a maximaniac like the rest of us.
Crzydrvr I hope you found the answer to your questions in this thread. Enjoy your stay at maxima.org. Make sure you use the search feature before posting otherwise you may get flamed and I hope you grow to enjoy our cars.

i did use the post the post feature, and all i got in return were posts on esetially diagnosing cooling probs, and as for trying to convert me try it i'm gonna be persuaded, give me a camaro over a maxima anyday, for 3,000 dollars you go from a quarter in 15s (stock) to running in the 10s, or you go nitrous and only apend 600 to get that but either way it looks better and sounds better going down the road.
and don't get me wrong i like maximas their fast and ride good, but overall they have the same drawback i have with most unibody frames and such, i assume the maxima has a unibody frame most new front tire spinners do, they lack the ability to modify extensively cheaply and semi easily ( i am not talking intakes and exhaust, i'm talking bigger engines and reenforced frames).

you guys are quick to flame..
there is not ONE flame on this entire thread... he asked a question and got his answer, with a little conversational humor in between... relax.

Camaros are uni-body too
yeah your right camaro's do have unibody frames, i was wrong on that (damn), how often though do you go to an import show or whatever you guys call them and see an 81 maxima that three years ago didn't run and made its home in a junkyard and someone took their time and effort to make that a car that will out run the newest high performance cars, you don't. Import cars are disposable, they are meant to be driven till they break down and you throw them away and buy another, camaros, corvettes, and yes even mustangs and mopars aren't, they are meant to be driven to the edge, you blow the motor and put another in.
And hell no matter what you put on your maxima you can't get near the purely orgasmic sound a 426 hemi with dual exhaust can make.

Guys u need to shut the hell up, the guy just couldn't find a thermostat. That ***** is well hidden
I had problem finding it too, so just chill out. Also Maximas are quick but not as quick as build 5.0 unless you got a supercharger with some other mods, so stop flaming on other cars. At least he didn't roll up over here with supping up the cavalier mod.

3. looks and sounds better going down the road if you are white trash (just kidding calm down it's really personal preference)

A) He started it.
B) A stock Maxima is as fast or faster than a stock 5.0 mustang. Throw $3000 at either one and they get much faster. I havent seen ANY stock, or near stock, 5.0s at my local track that run 14.7 (that's what a stock 5-speed Maxima can run)
I guess I will stick my nose in this conversation for humors sake.... I think a lot of the members to the org started with the Maxima for a simple reason... Originality... It is a car that has decent acceleration, gas mileage, looks, and isn't whored out.... Now I can appreciate a person that takes any make/model of a car from a junkyard and turns it into something respectable.... But next time you go to a junkyard, ask how many 95-99 Maxima's they have in the lot without major body damage..... Then ask how many Camaro's..... You mentioned Camaro's and Corvettes in your previous defense so I will assume you are a 'Chevy' guy....'Like A Rock' right buddy?? These models coming from the same company that manufactured the lovely Berretta, and Corsica, and Cavalier..... Speaking of 'disposable' cars. I would have a lot more respect for the good ol' American muscle if every trailor court didn't have one of every color Camaro, from every year, sitting outside their eligant 'double wide'.... Any you are right on when you said that there is nothing that sounds better than a big V8 with exhaust... I love it when those good ol' V8 fella's get the 'small ding-a-ling' syndrom and think that louder is faster.... However I find it more 'orgasmic' (as you put it) to have a gorgeous blonde next to me in a luxury import car playing with my stick shift.... To each their own though right?

Finally , the second best reply I have seen so far, the first was with the pictures. It is funny how so many people forget that a question deserves an answer, especially when people needs help. I am amazed by the constant (-) input , when people reply to post. If someone cannot help others in need, then reserve the bandwith for others than can!

u honestly gotta love that sound. true VROOOM VROOM by a V8. a big vrooom on that thing and you could send the ricer behind you rolling back for miles !
LOL. All this started from a thermostat question......got a good luagh thats for sure. Now I'm not here to prove a point and all but I drive about 100 miles a day on the interstate.......and cars break down all the time. The only time I see an import on the side of the road is when it has a flat. Whats even more funny is that whoever owns these american cars.....leave them there for days.until they get the move it or tow it stickers. Its like the highway has become yet another american car junk yard. My soon to be wifes escort.......has a odometer that doesnt even have enough digits to display..100,000 it will display 99,999 though.......talk about a disposable car right there...thing is made to be chunked at 100k. Well thats my rant for the night......whos next.
escorts are ford and im a chevy guy, FORD SUCKS
okay first i wrote a long descriptive post then checked some facts and it was erased, then i wrote a shorter less descriptive but to the point post and when i submitted it the server was too busy, so if you want my numbers go to engine-power.com they have 0-60 and quater mile stats on a lot of cars and look at Chevy camaro z28 has a second on the 1/4 of maxima se.

Foooooooo real jooooooooooo and it has 2 more cylinders.
I agree ford sucks...............gm is getting better with quality to a degree even consumer reports can attest to that. However I still wouldnt buy an american car the quality just isnt there.

There are lots of cars that are faster than Maximas.
Please browse our Timeslip Forum to see what Maximas run with different mods.
I challenge you to find any GM car that has run as well as my Maxima. In almost 180,000 miles it has required one starter, one window regulator and about 4 electrical sensors be replaced. This is in addition to normal wear items like belts, tires, brakes etc...

Dave
whoever owned that firehawk needs to learn to drive it if hes only running 14.5's. And as for quality and lasting, that mostly has to do with driving style, there are some out there with 180k + that still run great, my Nova for example had almost 250K on the chasis and about 175K on the motor and it would run past Camaro's no problem. It all depends on how you drive and maintain it. For a large part people who don't know **** about cars buy camaro's and don't take care of them, then 5 years down the road someone who does buy's it cheap off them cause they know for 5,000 they can build back to batter than new.
And as for the reason you see so many GM's in the wrecking yard and not imports, well that an easy one. First off most wrecking yards only car American, now that brings up a question of why mostly American wrecking yards? Well that is because of interchangability. The parts of a Maxima are almost exclusive to the Maxima, they won't go on an Altima for a large part, atleast i know it used to be this way, however the parts on a Camaro work on vettes and firebirds and some trucks, not many. Since all the parts are interchangeable it makes sense to just make them available. And another thing to think about, and i know i'm gonna get reamed for this, maybe you don't see Maxima wrecking yards cause once they are wrecked they are useless.
