CV Joint or just the boot?

Well my friend works at Tire Kingdom and said that I needed new CV joints. Heres why.... when I turn, you hear these loud clanking sounds from the front wheels, almost like metal hitting against something, but only when the wheels are turned, not when the wheels are straight. I also have a lot of grease on the inside of my front rims and all over the suspension. Do I need new Joints or just boots? The guy told me he would hook me up with the parts needed, labor, and warranty for $300? Tell me what you guys think.

Yea, if it clicks then you need new joints...just get remanufactured axle(s). CV Joints only click when turning, also check both boots for tears

and. . .a THIRD.

Yes, you should replace the whole joint at this point - a boot would only hold you for a short while until the existing joints get ground up by all the contaminents that have surely made it inside at this point.

Talk to Marty at Raxles. Super helpful, great warranty, excellent joints - not as cheap as remanufactured joints, but these are pretty much the best you can buy & they WILL last, unlike many inferior reman. joints available from any auto parts store.

Good luck!

PS: See if your mechanic would have any problem with you bringing the joint to him if you buy it direct - shouldn't be a big deal. Not sure what the book is on this job, but it should definitely be less than 2 hours - you'll need a front wheel alignment after the job, btw.

Well my mechanic said he did not mind at all if I bought the CV joints on my own, the only thing is, i the joints get messed up again, he would not cover the warranty, I would have to go through whoever I bought them from, but I think I saw on the site that there is lifetime warranty, and since the job is being done professionally (with receipt), then I should have no problem, if something does go wrong, the most I would pay is for the labor again correct? Thanks guys.

Ask him to visit the website (www.raxles.com), or bring him printouts of info. from the site. You may be able to persuade him to warrany the work once he realizes the Raxles unit is a far superior product to anything he was planning on putting in your car. Plus, with Raxles lifetime warranty, he wouldn't have any problems getting the part replaced if there were a failure.

Have him take 2 minutes to call Marty directly on the 800# - very nice guy & he'll explain why his product makes sense for you, the customer & him, the shop.

It's a win-win.
