Manual Tranny Question
4th gens, mainly 95-97 (mainly 97) have been known to have a lot of tranny issues. If you do a search you will see dozens upon dozens of people complaining about how their tranny died on them, a lot even at an early age. At 80k, your engine is in tip top shape (if standard maintenance have been done) but tranny, it all depends on your driving and your luck. Nissan Maxima's are great cars but its only flaw is tranny issue. Many have blamed on aftermarket clutches.
My car is rolling up on 100K miles this year, and I think it's starting to show signs of a diff. bearing failure too. You know that whine you hear in first or reverse? I'm starting to hear that in all gears. Under engine braking it's most noticable to me. When I just tip the throttle in to remove the load, the sound disappears.
My car has acted like the differential is improperly shimmed since the day I got it. In first or second during an on-off-on throttle transition, it feels real jerky. I have a feeling that the ECU causes part of this problem, but driveline lash is a factor too (IHMO).
There's a great website on the problem and the repair here: www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/804
