Horrible "clang" twisted metal sound

When I turn my steering wheel I hear the most horrible sound. Its quite loud and noticable in the cabin. Its coming from my front right area and I have no idea what it could be. It only triggers when I turn the wheel more than 50% from center. It sounds like metal bainging around somewhere. I took a quick look in my wheel well, underneath the car, and in the engine bay and there was nothing unusual. I was hoping something was caught up to simply remove it. So I think this might be internal. Again I didn't take a real good look so I will have to specify better tomorrow. Thanks in advance.

Look into the strut mount bearing fix - see if the description matches your symptom.

If Im correct, I had the same sound coming from my front (l/r) wheels. I had to replace the bearing on the struts as a result of the car being lowered and going through many bumps. If your car is lowered, definitely check out the problems immediately. Any delay could result in more damage. Also, if your car is really slammed, I would suggest raising it a little more....just my opinion though.

Is your car lowered? Did you do the install yourself? This happened to me but it was because the lower two bolts on the strut were loose. The causes the spring to bind and build tension until it realeases and makes the bad sound.

I did the install myself on the front springs. I have progress springs on there with factory struts, I am going to be redo the front soon with illuminas, good choice? Not only that but redo the rears as well. Any suggestions as to how I might avoid this noise after the new struts are installed? One thing though, I dont notice the noise unless the wheels are cocked and I am either going forward in first gear or reverse with the wheels still cocked the same. Hmm interesting. I read that review on the strut bearing setup, should that be something I take a look at then?

I took a look at my suspension and everything looked in order. I think what is wrong is my power steering fuild. Its about half an inch below the minimum. I think it might be the pump making the noise since the fuild level is low. Now I don't hear it as much (keep in mind the fluid is still under min) when I drive. It was just really bad that 1st day. I hope I haven't damaged anything. I'll keep you guys posted.

It is not the PS pump. You still had enough of fluid in the reservoir even one inch below the min mark.

Hmm...then I really don't know what it could be. When I put in my struts several months ago I got new bearings. The sound seems to have gone away, however I don't just want to assume things are peachy since it was quite an evil sounding sound. What do you guys think?

sounds like a control arm to me, in fact i would put some money on thats what it is ($.50)
hows the car handle when driving, any play in the steering wheel,
the car feel a little unsteady at speed?

I had a VERY similar noise, and the car would almost like....wobble when i would take sharp right turns, but it was ONLY right turns... turns out I had a Bad left control arm.... Since your noise is coming from the right, I would take a sharp left turn and see how it feels...

I hope for your sake that its not a control arm...mad $$$

In my case it was free, a dealers mistake but, they quoted me 300+ or so. im not sure how much of a DIY job it is

That would be a junkyard part, not a Nissan dealer part. Just a welded, stamped piece of steel, really. Some things you just don't buy new - a control arm is definitely on the list.
