taillight wiring question.............

hypothetically, i wanted to wire a switch in the cabin (most likely under the dash) that could control power to my taillights independently of my headlights...what would be the easiest way to do that, ie: short of splicing a swich into the wires that lead to the actual taillight, like possibly running the switch off of a fuse? And if splicing into the taillight wires is the easiest way, is there anything special i should know about these wires, (for example, many people have tried to wire their interior neons onto the door switch, only to find out that the door switch doesen't work like a regular switch, and it fails to work for their neons).

any advice would be appreciated......

thanks.
