Will be buying a Max soon, what should I look out for?

Hey guys,
Since my current car is starting to slowly fall appart, ill be buying a max soon. I'm looking at 95 and 96, as those are probably the only ones I will be able to afford. Now, I found plenty of them around my area on autotrader and car.com, but some have as much as 130K miles on them. Since it's a max I dont feel too worried about buying one with such high mlg (hope I'm right) because I believe that they are built very well, however I would still like to know what kind of problems I should look out for. Also what kind of repairs should I expect to do after I get it? (I've seen alot of people complaining about the repairs)

Thanks alot!
Tom

I'd check the belts,CV boots, brake wear, or just have a nissan dealer take a look at it for you before you buy. They probaly charge like 40 bucks to go over and inspect it.

I have a 95 max with about 145k miles now, and it looks and runs great. I think most people here would agree that the max is built pretty well. It has a great engine, and if you take care of it, it will take care of you

Since I'm near the milage you are looking at, I'll just list what I've had done recently: new clutch @ 137k, new rotors, new exaust hanger's, new drive belts @ 138k, and a bunch of alignment issues (ongoing).

If I were you I would try to keep the mileage around 100k, but I think as long as you aren't pouring on the miles and if the price is right, you should get a good life out of the car.

Good luck with your search!

ps on the 5-speed!

Mine is a 1995 and has 150k. Previous owner stated that there has been no major work done on the car and I verified that with Nissan. It all depends on how the previous owner took care of the car. Of course there are a few things that will give but other wise these are good, strong cars. I dont think I will go back to Honda again.

Definately....get a 5spd! That is my biggest recommendation! I agree also with the standard checks that everyone else is saying. If 5spd, clutch condition is something to look out for. If you cannot get a new one negotiated into the deal, you will probably have to do one. Not necessarily though. If a clutch is taken care of, it can last a long time. Just depends on usage.

Good luck in your searching
**Watch out for autotrader and car.com...they have the tendency to be over-priced. check for averages on edmunds.com, and build it just as the one you are looking at. They are very accurate with fair market value...I used to sell cars...dealers will not tell you that.**
