I need a new clutch

I would have done a search, but the search feature has been disabled.

Since my stocker decided to take a dump at 66K, i need to find a replacement that will hold up a little better. I know there's a few out there such as Centerforce, ACT, Exedy, and clutchmasters. Are there any brands I should stay away from? Btw I'm not looking for a racing clutch, just something better than stock.

The car is my daily driver and it may see one or two track events a year. I have bolt ons, and I don't plan ever going turbo/sc or using NAWWWS.

What are your suggestions?

A real OEM replacement is fine for all na applications. ACT or maybe an upgrade Exedy would be a good step up too.

If you are interested in a 11.8lb billet aluminum Fidanza flywheel, I should have some in about a week or two. $325 + shipping

There is a problem with ACT clutches killing transmissions if you abuse the transmission. Now before everyone jumps in and starts telling me their story of how their upgraded clutch never hurt anything, note 2 things...1.) I said when you abuse it...the rate of transmission failuers here IS higher when people get the ACT and 2.) this guy killed a clutch in 66K miles...so obviously he is doing something wrong. I had driven a standard shift car once, for a half hour, at 5am, drunk, before I bought my car and am at 80K and the clutch still has some life in it.

Replace it with an OEM (do NOT get the key value clutch...many stories of dealerships tricking people or even lying about giving them OEM when they actually got key value...you have to be VERY specific) and learn how to drive stick better. No way your clutch should have died in 66K miles if you were driving it right. You must be riding the clutch or doing some other wackiness. I basically leaned to drive stick from nothing on my car and did not wear out my clutch yet...you are doing something wrong. I have leaned to double clutch, done some crazy stuff, and I live on a massive hill with a stop sign at the top and I didn't kill my clutch that fast...something is DEFINITELY not right. Reports here seem to say about 120-130K for the stock clutch.

almost 110k on stock, and I'm not exactly easy on it, but I don't ride it, just mash the hell out of it.

I love my Exedy stage 1. Having a lightened flywheel is nice too. The combo is really nice and for the price that Jeff92se sells the Fidanza at it cant be beat. Since you replacing the clutch might as well do the flywheel as well. I hear it works great with stock clutch too.

From what ive read, Exedy is the one who makes the OEM clutches for the max.

Also, if your not seriously, i mean seriously planning to go forced induction/nitrous(which i see your not) there is absolutely no need for anything other than an OEM clutch. They will handle every single all motor mod you can throw at them. Also 66K miles does seem really low for a clutch, i can just imagine if you got a stronger clutch (Act/exedy), it wouldnt be your clutch giving it, it'd be your tranny. Just stick with an OEM from the dealers (NOT KEY VALUE) clutch and your all set...

I think Exedy IS an oem supplier of Nissan clutches BUT I don't know if the ones on ebay etc.. are the same model numbers Nissan specifies. I'd becareful. Not so much about the disc but the pressure plate clamping force rating. I wish I knew what the real oem rating was so everyone could compare different pressure plates but I've never seen it.

These are some of the auctions I speak of:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2444824546
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2445249684
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2446402315

All are ~$110, which I think is fairly decent for a whole clutch kit.

Price might be good. But if it turns out they are crap, will that $110 seem good when it slips like hell?

All I'm saying is you had better be 100% sure about these things before spending the time to remove your tranny to get it done. Because if it turns out to be crap, you will have to spend 4x as much doing it again and buying another clutch. Up to you.

How difficult is it to change your clutch in your opinion? I've been doing a lot of research on replacing my clutch on my own. Because I would save $300 plus if I do. But I'm just a little scared of doing it because I've never done this operation before. I have all the tools I need. Are there any pointers anyone can give. I have a haynes manual, I've looked at the how to's, on replacing the clutch, about 100 times. But I'm still very nervous about doing it. Sometimes it seems like it will be real hard and other times it seems easier. So any help would be appreciated.
By the way my clutch is starting to go out now at about 137,000 miles.

Well if you have someway to lift your car, and are able to unmount/remove and mount/reinstall a transmission then the clutch should be simple. The biggest obstacle I think is removing our damn trannys. Check out motorvate about removing the tranny

It's not hard but it's a little time consuming. You need to be able to jack the car up high enough to get in there and have a jack ready to help lower the tranny down/up. Other than common hand tools, you need the big socket and breaker bar for the CV joint nut and maybe air tools for the flywheel bolts if you want to change the rear main seal.

I'm not worried about the clutch part. It's the process of getting to the clutch that I'm worried about. I have to pull out the drive axles and disconnect a bunch of other stuff, including the tranny. So it worries me.

Take it to a mechanic if it worries you. My mechanic can install a new clutch for under $200 not including parts. He charges $46 hour labor...Id rather pay then try to do this at home

Are you sure? Because it's takes at least a few hours for the machine shop to resurface the flywheel. If he's not doing that, I'd worry

That price isn't including the resurfacing of the flywheel....its just to install the clutch itself. He's a good guy so I mean it wouldn't be too much more if I were to get the flywheel resurfaced

Hey man, unless you have a nice, clean, comfortable working space to do it, take it to a mechanic. It's really not worth it if you're lying on your gravel driveway with your car on cinder blocks in the freezing cold. Trust me.

As long as we're talking clutches, I have a JWT stage 1 clutch with a fidenza flywheel and I can't complain.

You must have an awesome mechanic. I can't find a place around here under $600.

You have a service center that charges $46/hr?
Around here it's at least $65/hr, the stealers are more like $75
