What causes CEL light from aftermarket ECU on 97+ max?

i've asked these questions on a few threads that talked about MEVI's and aftermarket ECU's. I was just wondering what made the 95-96 so different from the 97-99 that it can take the ECU with no problems and us 97+ max's have to get a CEL light. I was wondering if it was just a small thing like difference in tranny? maybe 95-96 has some special harness which makes ECU read it or something and 97-99 is missing it so CEL comes on? Or maybe something in engine? what sensor are we missing that makes CEL come on? or maybe its the harness attached to the ecu?

A lot of people replace their tranny and if its something as small as a harness, it would be a good break to get a 96 max with 96 harness or just harness or whatever...*rambling*. can someone make this clear as to what makes CEL light come on?

P.S. - yes i've been here for 2 years and i still dont know what causes it

so its the rear 02 sensor thats causing the CEL light to come on? If thats the case, there has to be an easy way to work around that right? Isnt the sensor just in a different location? Maybe if we get exhaust similar to 95-96 we wont have the issue? If sensor cant reach i remember reading how to extend it somehow?

The two o2 sensors are wired differently. A 96 ECU cannot read the input from a 97 sensor.

The o2 sensor on or after the cat is not supposed feed the ECU air/fuel info like the front o2 sensors on the pre-cats. So it really does not matter.

sorry if i sound hard headed. Your saying its how the wiring is and what its used for. So putting it in a different location wont change anything cause its purpose will still be the same...?

I am saying it does not matter if the 96 ECU cannot read the 97 o2 sensor because it will not make a difference in how the car runs. The rear o2 sensor does not play a roll in air/fuel adjustment.

The CEL will come on saying there is a problem with the sensor, and that problem is that the 96 ECU cannot read the 97 o2 sensor becuase it is wired differently then a 96 o2 senosr would be.

From what I remember correctly, the 96 sensor has is a 2 wire system while the 97 sensor is a 3 wire system. That is why when going to purchase a new rear o2 sensor 96 and 97's are not interchangeable.
