Max is sick,Please see if you can help.

My 99 auto max has 49K miles and is haveing some trouble. Any feedback that you can give would be great! There is a slight whining sound coming from what seems like the front passenger side(Not my wife, I checked) When speeding up there is not a smooth feeling on the gas pedal. O.K. Only sometimes, there is a shifting prob. Its sporatic, sometimes at 60 mph ,my rpm is close to 3000 when usually it is at 2100. There definatly seems to be something wrong. I checked the fluid and it is level. Any suggestions?

The whining could be a number of things including a failing power steering pump (never heard of that on 4th gen), a failing alternator (common on the later 4th gens), or a bad CV joint (this usually doesn't whine, but clicks and grinds). I'd doubt the whining is coming from the tranny because tranny is located on the drivers side. Yank the passenger wheel off, pull off the splash cover and look at the main crank pulley. Sit to the right of the oil filter. Push on the pulley and see if it moves at all. There have been cases of the inner rubber seal of the pulley failing causing the pulley to wobble which ultimately could throw a whole bunch of things out of whack including leaving you stuck somewhere.

The sporadic shifting is a cause for concern and could a number of things, but I'm putting money on a bad shift solenoid. The fact that you're seeing high rpms at a 60mph cruise and poor shifting tells me the tranny is confused. High rpms while cruising sounds like the tranny is in 3rd instead of 4th. Stupid question, but are you sure you're in O/D all the time. If you push the O/D button off, you're in 3rd and I think 3000rpms at 60mph = 3rd gear of "D".

Are you getting any check engine lights?

My only advice is to take the car to a reputable shop. I'd almost suggest a Nissan because they're much more familiar with these trannys and more experience at diagonosing the problem. Ask around and see if any local owners are familiar with the local Nissan dealer.

Thank you very much. I will check the pulley. Yeah, I'm in Overdrive all the time. I checked the fluid again and it was a little low (HOT) so I topped it off and I'm gonna see if it makes a difference. If not I'll go in to see the Nissan dealer.
Thanks again for your info.

make sure you do not over fill the tranny fluid. you can ruin your tranny.

whining or whirling sound can be a bad wheel bering.

sometimes i just don't know waz up, but i got used to it. oh well
