removing shift knob

Good point. I figure if I ever wanted to use it again, it'll be a lot easier to unscrew it when the shaft is attached to the car rather than having to vice the clamp or something. No point having the shift **** attached to a stub.

the shifter should have some play in it, and rotate slightly...but i wouldnt do that to hard. What i recomend is grab the shifter with a rubber pad (sold a lot of places, made for the kitchen, to help take off jar tops), and keep it straight while twisting off the **** itself. If you have two rubber pads, even better
Ha.....I twisted like all get out on mine..........wouldnt come off...even tride vise grips. Ended up twisting the leather right off the thing........I was like whoo hoo its turning...then the leather fell off and there sat an ugly sticky plastic shift ****. I tried everything, rags, rubber, vise grips you name it......to no avail...

lol
i bet he tried turning it clockwise wariow. well infinitiblast, i hope you werent attached to that old ****. Since its already messed up, you try a vice or lock grip pliars on the ball itself? That would more likely work, and be easier if you held the shifter shaft itself with a rubber pad. i cant think why your's is so tough

Clockwise.............thats almost an insult...lol. No I didnt turn it clockwise...lefty loosey..righty tighty.
Oh I know why mine was so tuff....when it was finally off....after some seriouse mutilation...there was some glue that looked like liquid nails in there...similar to what they use on construction sites.
Oh well...doesnt matter that was way back when...just figured I would post my story

I removed mine with a vise grip. Not the prettiest way to remove it but I was not going to use the **** again anyway. My firends at the NIssan dealer say that they rearely remove one without some damage to it due to the glue that is used at the factory.....
Shift ***** are really on there
My son and I removed his off his 98, and that **** was on there. I wrapped his with a rag, and still did a little damage to the leather, I tried to grip his real low on the ****, also the suggestion of turning it clockwise first is a good one, to break the glue, then turn it counter-clockwise, to remove it. You might want to tap around it with a hammer, you just need to break the seal of the glue, then it will twist right off.
Try to use a tool with alot of leverage, long handled pliers work nice.
