I dont really like the cheap beige skinny looking steering wheel on my 96. Can I swap out for the nice black thick SE steering wheel of a 97+.

Not sure about the whole cruise control thingy but you'd have to get the airbag also, which is $$$

i believe 96shogunmax has a 96 maxima with a 97+ steering wheel. He has a GLE and never mentioned anything about cruise control not missing. Its just the airbag which creates a problem. I think you have to get a 97+ airbag to accompany the steering wheel...96's wont work from what i remember....

yes, the airbag is different, the wheel, and the connector to the cruise control. I did it with my moms car. Her bag was deployed and i had a 1997 i30 sterring wheel with airbag and put that it. everything worked except the cruise.

You ARE correct the connectors for the cruise as WELL as the airbag are different, but it can be done by simply removing the ENTIRE wiring harness from the interior of a 97, which involves gutting the entire car...then you have to take apart the little module behind the steering wheel...it has airbag stuff on it...and replace it with the 97, to get everthing to work properly. I got everything to work for me for a day and a half but think that I've blown a fuse somewhere, so no worky...but the steering wheel fits and looks and feels much better than the stupid 95 gxe wheel I had in there...oh...airbag for sale too...hit me up!

Hold on a sec...

Only the cruise control connector is different?

or

Both the AIRBAG & Cruise is different.

Vecause If i have to gut the whole car for the airbag to work I wont do it. But ifs its the cruise control then i dont care if it works or not.?? Please respond...

wouldn't a wheel cover do the trick? Takes care of the "skinny" quality at least.

These look good:

here's a half-shot of my $9 wheel cover. Feels good and the side trim matches my seats so

probably the connectors but the color of the wires might be different also. you should ask somebidy that has a 99 max what colors the wires are to see if they are the same as yours and use a voltmeter to check if they give a different reading also. research

Ok for the cruise, the connectors are different but both only have 3 wires:

95-96 models:
______________
|_1_|_2_|_3_|_X_|

97-99 models:
___________________
|_1_|_X_|_3_|_X_|_2_|

so my guess is just the connectors are different u just need to re-arrange the wires.!

Hate to burst your bubble, but the airbag plugs are definatly different...it maybe because my 95 was a GXE while all the parts came from my crashed 97 SE...could be jus the trim difference, but I know for a fact that they are different.

So how did you go about installing it? Or did you return it and get the right one for your model year.?

Well...I ended up completely rewiring my 95 to be a 97...so that solved my problems...I mean...I gutted both cars...and basically reconstructed the 95 to be a 97..only thing that is original 95 is the steering column, the doors, and the chassis

I just spoke to 96showgun max and he said that it was direct swap./ So i dont know what to do now. I was supposed to get a 2K steering wheel with airbag.

First off...

97-99 SE steering wheel and get the 97-99 cruise control switch.

THESE TWO ARE A DIRECT SWAP. Connectors are plug and play. You have to drill a hole out on the steering wheel alittle bigger to get it to fit over the clockspring right. THERE IS NO NEED FOR A COMPLETE WIRING HARNESS CHANGE.

EDIT : total cost for me was $300 bucks switch and airbag and wheel from another org member. Sometimes you just have to be a pioneer.
