Odometer stopped recording mileage.

I just thought I was getting terrible gas mileage since I'm at half tank and the odometers at 67 miles since my last fill up. But I've been watching it, and my mileage just doesn't increase, no matter how much I drive it. I guess I should get it fixed.... although the idea of having a perpetually-low mileage car would be pleasing.... it wouldn't be right to sell it or do a trade in on it... kind of like cheating the dealer. Is there some way for me to fix it? I'm pretty low on cash right now, and I've got a trip to Canada coming up in a week.

either your speedo head or revolution (aka speed) sensor most likely failed. my speedo head has been acting up and i need to wack it so it starts working again that's cuz i somehow broke it swapping gauges.

have you done anything to them lately? you could check to see if everything is still plugged in, but i doubt that's the case. goodluck fixing it and sorry to hear. cars are awesome, but really suck too. i guess it's safe to say they're an oxymoron.

I don't even know what they are? I changed the fuel filter recently, but I didn't touch anything else.. The speedometer still works. Everything else works good. Car accelerates and drives well, etc. Should I take it to a dealer? Think they'll charge a lot to get it fixed?

Ok. thanks. I just hope they don't quote me a high price, then tell me that I'm required to have it fixed, like some kind of odometer fraud or anything.

Eric425,

You're are not required to fix it. It's totally up to you. When it's time to sell, you simply note on the tittle that the mileage is not accurate.

That aside, please let us know how you resolve the problem.

Wouldn't the dealer record that as odometer problems? So when people carfax your car it will say that it has/had odometer problems

sOber,

The dealer does not have time to do things like that (it does not generate income.) All the information that Carfax sell you is coming from the DMV (department of motor vehicles) car tittles.

****. That'd suck if they do. If they record that the car has odometer problems, it'll be a lot harder to trade-in/ sell later. Even if I get the problem fixed right away, the guy could be asking how would he know that the mileage is accurate? I couldn't prove it. I hope not. I'll get it done this weekend, I suppose, if the cost is under $100 or so. If not, I'll have to wait till my next check.
