Knock sensor, amazing mechanic.

After 2 days trying to remove the defective knock sensor using all the tricks/tools learned in this forum, I gave up and brought it to my mechanic.

Well, using a single 12 mm wrench, he was able to remove the bad one, put in the new one in less than 30 minutes!

Just amazing. And there was not a single scratch on his hands.

Yes, he did, but not much smaller than mine. I think it has more to do with his mechanical skill.

I bought the KS on ebay for $90, including shipping.

Having spent way too much time on the damn knock sensor the other day, that mechanic MUST have had small hands.

There was no way i could get my hands anywhere near the KS with a friggin wrench.

Finally decided to bust out the wallet and purchase a long 1/4" drive extension and a jointed 12mm socket.

Can't tell the difference in feel. But error code (34) is gone, the other two codes, 43 (Throttle Postion Sensor) and 77 (Rear O2 sensor), are also gone.

It will take a while to know if there's any effect in gas mileage.

Yes, the $90 knock sensor is brand new.

you should feel the difference almost instantly...

your low rpm band should have sucked like a crack head on ice...

pressing the on the gas now should give you awesome power back down low...

how do you test the old knock sensor again? i've got one that i wanted to test, i think you measure the resistance right. what should it be, 440ohm?

440 000 ohm . You need a 10 M ohm meter.

Psssh, I could have beaten your mechanic. You should have done a search. I posted a few threads on how to remove the knock sensor. I even listed the tools you need and had pictures. =P I do them in 10 minutes if the engine isn't hot. Hardest part is getting the sensor back in the engine.

All you need is a 12mm swivel socket with a really long extension for the ratchet. Needle nose pliars and one of those "antenna magnets". Then you need some patience for getting the knock sensor bolt back in. One trick is to just break the knock sensor connector harness right off the mounting bracket. Saves a lot of time. This is assuming that you have a new knock sensor AND harness. My routine for removal goes like this. Attach 12mm swivel to extension, extension to ratchet. Reach in there and turn really hard. Loosen bolt and remove bolt with antenna magnet. Follow harness from the knock sensor back to the connector. Take flathead screw driver and knock the connector right off the mounting bracket. This is done by putting the flathead against the part of the connector that wraps around the metal. Just put the screw driver against one of the sides and give the screw driver handle a good smack with your other hand. Connector should break which is fine. Follow harness down and you will see the hardness is also "ziptied" to the bracket. Just use scissors or wire cutters to cut the "nub" that goes in to the metal. You will have a new one on your new sensor harness also. I usually use a really sharp knife to slice that off. Knock sensor is now off. Next up is placing the new knock sensor back in. Use can use the magnet antenna to do that and the bolt also. This part takes the longest. But once you have everything lined up. Just tighten with socket and put new connector on to mounting bracket. Done. Oh, very important. Wear gloves. =)
