hard wiring + mounting V1 (or other radar detector) "clean" install
i hard wired a V1 radar and was wondering where everyone mounts theirs...i now have it below my rear view mirror and its kinda in the middle of the windshield....i know we are supposed to mount them as high as possible, but theres the solar band at the top so i cant put it way up high.
i ran the wire under the headliner and took off the rear view mirror and dropped it down there...but it doesnt look too good because it still has several inches to go to the radar detector...i wanted to run it through the stem of the mirror, but that would require a lot of drilling and i may only get through like an inch or two unless i cut off the rj11 connector then add a new one (would be a pita and i would need a connector and the crimping tool)
so how does everyone mount their radar...pics would be great...i can take and post pics if you guys dont understand how i did mine

My V1 is mounted just to the left of the mirror right below the tint at the top of the windshield. My wire runs around the windshield and down to the cig. lighter. The only visible wire is the couple inches from the headliner to the V1.

My V1 is mounted right below and on the left side of the mirror. It is barely below the tint (which has no effect on radar anyway), and works wonderfully. Just this morning it sniffed out a very well hidden speed trap at the base of a loooong hill with a looooow speed limit...!
To hardwire it, I squished the normal phone cord power lead between the windshield and the headliner, and ran it down the A pillar and towards the fusebox. I didn't know exactly where to tap into the fusebox, so I simply followed the cig lighter wire back from the lighter and tapped into it under the wheel...

Dave B...i went down the a pillar under the steering wheel column there is a white wire with a blue stripe...this is the one mentioned in the faq for hardwiring a radar (tho its for a 2000+, but the wiring is similar and this wire works)
rdaneel...how do you know tint band has no affect on radar when the manufacturer says it does?...please do explain

I have mine hard wired to some +12V switched wire under the dash...wasn't aware how easy it was to get to the back of the cig lighter when I did it...but it doesn't matter.
I do not find that the blue tint messes with the radar detection significantly. It might affect laser...but since laser detection isn't all that helpful anyway, who cares. The tint may affect the radar detection a little, but the detection range is still so ridiculous it really doesn't matter. Having it way way up there let's it "see" over hills very well too. Overall: I wouldn't mount it anywhere else.
Note the remote display in front of the steering wheel...having big bright lights up there is
EDIT: If I had it to do over again I would probably just use a fuse tap like I did with my changer. The wire runs between the headliner and windshield and down the pillar. At the bottom there is a remarkably good, hidden path to follow...the wire is totally invisible except where it comes out to go to the detector at the top.

Actually, I have to admit that I described my install poorly - I did it the way endus did it, not below the mirror. That seemed to me the cleanest and best way to install it. I agree that the blue tint has no effect on radar range, the height is important for range, and I even get laser alarms (all false so far - darn Dodge Durangos!!!) through the tint...
