Cant search, transmissions problems

I have a 96 I30 and sometimes it will drive and sometimes the car will not move when it is in gear.

Is this a major repair job?
Would I need to get a whole new transmission?
Will a Maxima transmission work?

Thanks

im assuming you have an auto

FIRST THINGS FIRST CHECK YOUR TRANNY FLUID LEVEL

if you give it some gas dose it jerk into gear?
how often does it happen?
have you run the transmission diagnostic test in the haynes manual?

give me more info, miles, driving style, 1st owner-2nd owner-3rd?

if you car is not moving when in drive, they call this neutralizing, then your tranny is loseing pressure which probably means you have a bad gasket(.50 part 300 labor) when they got mine down they found that heat had fried the tranny and i needed a rebuild(i let mine neutralize for a month, dont do this)

a maxima tranny should work

good luck

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, it was jerking into gear.
It was happening all the time.

However it was taken care of, the mechanic said that there was a lot of water in the tranny, which is true because a month ago when it was flooding I went through a lot of high water. Then he said I will eventually need to get it rebuilt.
