Thermostat

I have a '95 3.0 liter that doesn't wnt to come up to temp.. The dash gauge shows that it is not up to temp either, and I don't have any heat.Does the thermostat need replaced or is it something else? Where is it,and is there anything special needed to replace it

Hi,

My Max just went through the EXACT same thing. The thermostat is bad. When I removed mine, I discovered that it had frozen (no pun intended) in the open position. Thus, the car was slow to heat up and cooled down when driving on the highway.

R&R is not do difficult. I used a 1/4" drive deep and short socket (sorry can't remember the size, maybe a 10mm.) The only thing to watch for is that you will be removing 3 nuts (not bolts) and the nut behind the belt tensioner is a pain to get to. I ended up placing the short socket onto the nut then fitting the ratchet to the socket. The torque values for these nuts is pretty low (80-90 in-lbs) so don't over tighten them. Follow the lower rad. hose (passenger side) up to the engine, that's the thermostat.

The thermostat was $20 at Autozone and another $4 bucks at Nissan for the gasket. Don't let this go, it will kill your gas mileage because the ECU keeps the engine in its "warm up" mode - retarded timing and more fuel.

Anyway good luck.

$15 at autozone with a gasket, and 10 minutes work and you are done. REMEMBER to grab so antifreeze too, because some of it will leak out!!! and let it cooldown before you do it too!!!

Going to replace mine this weekend since the weather will be a little nicer. We don't have to remove anything to get to it right? Do I have to drain the coolant?

I'll probably replace the coolant this weekend while I'm at it. Need to see if my friend will let me use his backyard to do it. Not sure if the thermostat from Murray's had the gasket, I'll look tomorrow. I'll probably return the one from Murray's that my dad got and get the AutoZone one.

I dont know about 95's but mine (99) was hard as hell to get at. I finally gave up and took it to the mechanic. He said that he had to lift my engin up a few inches to get at it. I knew that I couldnt get at it. Hopefully you can get at yours or you are more mechanically inclined than I am. Good luck.

My 95 all I did was take removed the horn I think (don't remember, but I think it was in the way), then I removed the hose of the thermostat housing (make sure you don't be a dumb$hit like me and decide to take off the radiator cap while you do it you will end up with alot of coolant spilling). Then I either used a 10mm or 14mm socket and took off the three bolts of the thermostat and put the new one on. And everything else reversed up. After you done refill the colant, and you are done. It's easy as he||.
