noise when idle

I just noticed a noise coming out somewhere from the hood(98' maxima). I basically can't pin point from exactly where so I am looking for some help here. Roughly it's coming out of a part that is driven by belt on the engine (passenger side). When you press the gas pedal the sound gradually disappears as you increase the gas. It sounds just like gear is bad or something. I am suspecting that maybe a pulley is bad or some other part that has a gear mechanism and is driven by that belt is bad. Anyone has an advice how to pin point what is wrong? I'd really appreciate it. Also, does any of the major mechanic stores do diagnostics on the spot? Thank you for your replies.

p.s. Anyone have an idea why the search feature is not working? It's not working for me even though I am logged in....

your problem sounds like the belt tensioner for the alternator/ac. You need a new belt tensioner.

I think you are right. Any idea what would be the best place to take the car to get it fixed? Also, any clue what would tensioner replacement cost (parts + labor)? Just trying to prevent being raped by mechanic...
In any case, thank you very much.
