I cruised out to the track with my F-Body friends today to test out my Poorman's CAI. Conditions according to my friends mobile weather station:

1157' above sea level
29.98 baro pressure
50 degrees
15mph HEAD WIND!!! with 25mph gusts!!!!

I'm happy to say I was the only 4-door import racing. No mods have been added since last time except my Konis, KYBs, and Poorman's CAI. My prior best was a 14.91@94.11mph with a 2.389 60 foot (with the HKS intake). My new best today:

2.285 60 foot
9.570@74.16 1/8th
14.81@93.58mph 1/4

I ran 2 14.8s, 2 14.9s, and 1 15.1 with 60 foots in the high 2.2 range to high 2.3 range. What REALLY makes me happy is the fact that strong head wind was probably a factor after 80mph and might be slowing me down a little in both et and trap speed. My best et was against a 95 Z28 that ran a 14.6@95mph vs my 14.8@94mph. Needless to say, I was on his bumper the whole length of the track which freaked out my F-Body friends and the Z28 driver wouldn't give me the time of day after the race. I couldn't count how many Mustangs I saw run in the mid 15s. 2 EBP Civic Si's with mods were running 15.9-16.0@87mph, Dakota R/T running 15.3@88mph, and GS-T with free mods running 15.0@95mph. Fastest F-Body was my buddies 98 Firebird running 12.2@112mph (usually runs 11.8s..gulp).

As you can see, the results are showing the Poorman's CAI producing the same power as the POP setup and possibly the PR CAI. The dyno results also prove the same thing. The only I was doing differently was shifting the 2-3 and 3-4 at an indicated 6100rpms. My 14.8s were done with 3rd gear. When I shifted to 4th, my car slowed down and ran 14.9s. Next time I go out I will shift to 4th IF the headwind isn't so strong.

Good runs, Dave. Seem like getting the 60' times below 2.3 is the key to getting our cars below the 15 sec. mark. Last month was my first visit back to the track after reinstalling my stock muffler (I just couldn't take the noise) and I couldn't get back into the 14's! My 60' time were all in the 2.3 range. When I ran my 14.7, my 60' was 2.23. I'm running stock 16's w/Dunlop 225/55's (20 psi) and launching around 2K.
What's your setup?

Terry-

I've got the same setup as you (y-pipe, B-pipe, stock muffler, Poorman's CAI). I actually ran faster after putting on my stock muffler (use to have HKS muffler). It sounds to me like the conditions weren't as good the last time you went out. I don't think it's the muffler. Like I said, I ran a couple 14.8s and 14.9s and then a 15.1. On the 15.1 run, I pulled a real high 2.3. Just one tenth of a difference makes for about .3 at the far end (at least that's my experience).

Good luck.

You're probably right. It was crowded that day and there were a couple of those dragster's out there. I never saw them clean the track once the whole two hours I was there. I'm going back in a couple of weeks and plan on getting there early.
I've also decided to go for the underdrive pulley for this car. I'll have it installed before the next trip to the track. It doesn't appear to be that much of a hp gain but I've been reading about it a lot and decided to go for it.

What size are your tires?

Nice runs!

My street tires are 225/50/16 Michelin Pilot XGTZ4s. When I raced with them, I could leave my car in third through the finish line, where I was just at redline.

Last fall, I decided to try 205/50/15 BFG Drag Radials on my stock rims on the front. The BFGs are softer, so the car hooks up better. The low tire profile drops the front end, which helps reduce weight transfer. The smaller diameter tires allow my car to redline sooner in each gear, as if a shorter final drive gear were in place, so I can shift into 4th gear about 150' from the finish line. Whoosh!

I raced last week in 50-degree weather. Nobody could hook up very well all night. On my first run, when the track still had some residual warmth, I ran my best time to date. But I still didn't hook up well until 3rd gear! All I need is a nice warm day followed by a nice cool evening. A warm, sticky track and a cool, dense intake charge, and Oh, baby! 14.50's, here I come...

I'm running on 16" Kosei K1s with 215/55 Yokohama Avid V4s with 26 psi. I had the rears pumped up to 42 psi. The K1s are very light and the overall weight (tire/rim) is about 2lbs lighter than the 15" stock setup. I had my front Koni's on max firmness (I've got KYBs in the rear). I'm gonna put my spring blockers in the rear next time I go out.

I was great to watch people come up and talk about my car. Hardly anyone could believe it was a NA 3.0 V6 with exhaust work. The announcer couldn't figure out what the hell my car was (no emblems, smoked out tails).
