Leaky water pump

I have to replace the water pump in my 95 SE. It has 150,000 miles. Is it necessary to replace the timing chain as well? How about the tensioner?

Also, Can anyone recommend a good after market online parts store.

Did mine over last summer on my 96........no chain or tensioner replacement is necessary.

Got my pump from http://www.courtesyparts.com/

Just because it's leaking doesn't mean you have to replace the whole pump. Stephan Max had this problem and when he removed the pump to inspect, he saw the pump itself was in good shape but it was the seals that had gone bad. See if you can get the seals by themselves from the dealership.

This IMHO is not worth it......its not a 5 minute job to get the pump out to change the o-rings.....Imagine cheaping out and just doing the o-rings to have the thing still leak.........been there, done that

He replaced the seals over 50,000 miles ago and still doesn't have a problem.

With all the posts I've read about concerning serious problems with the removal/installation of the water pump, I think this may be one of the rare jobs that should be left to a Nissan tech.

It's really not that hard except for working in tight places. It just takes some patience and a good reference manual.

after talking to a nissan tech that is a friend of a guy I work with, he said that 9 times out of 10 the serious problems come from people turning the crank too much when relieving or applying pressure to the chain. It really is a simple job. Simple, not easy. I still have scars on my hands and it's been about 4 months. If I was not absolutely certain that I could handle it, I would take it to the dealer too.
BTW I would go ahead and put in a new tensioner. Just my opinion.

Dave
i second that, or at least to somone who has more knowledge on it. i tryed this last october, didn't get pump out cause the damn chilton manual told me not to pull tensioner out and a local machanic did it for me and said he pulled it. i wasn't having releasing enough slack on the timing chain, and therefore couldn't pull it. could turn into a long project if things aren't done the right way. i personally had no time for it, school + work no other car.

good luck!
