y-pipe and drop resistor

would any local small muffler shop install the y-pipe on my max? would they say anything about emissions? will it pass? and what exactly is a drop resistor mod?

If I remember right, it should pass...but I really dunno for sure. Someone else can answer that one.

The drop resistor mod...well, there's a resistor in the engine bay. It's like a plug, and if you disconnect it, it allows full line pressure to the transmission. This allows it to shift harder and faster than normal.

However...it's not reccomended that you have it on all the time. It's best just to hook it up to a WOT switch or something of that nature. Also, if you plan on using it, you should have a transmission cooler.

Hopefully someone else will chime in here with more info...

FYI i track tested this mod one night (drop resistor) and i consistantly ran better times not using it than using it, It makes your tranny sound like its shifting way harder but i don't think it makes the shifts any faster and even if it does i doubt its worth the it to the wear it makes on your tranny

How much faster you shift also depends upon how much power you have going through the tranny. This is why people like Jime who are running large shots of nitrous see such good results from it...whereas if you're stock, you'll see some difference but not as much.

This is true when i tested it i was mostly stock except intake and exhaust....BUT i can say i would DEFINITELY not run this mod with Nos especially with out a vb mod....thats a sure way to send yourself tranny shopping

You are on crack dude. The drop resistor saves your tranny not hurts it. Here's and artical you should read, (4th queston down): http://www.nissanperformancemag.com/...r03/ask_sarah/

Either way I trust Jime over you.

Most of that article that Sarah wrote is true and its a good article, except for

"the transmission controller is programmed to give full line pressure at wide open throttle"

That is NOT true and I already argued that out with her editor on a different thread and he admitted I was correct.

Using the drop resistor with a VB mod is counter-productive because they are both trying to do much the same thing, shift faster and produce less heat. For pure racing the drop resistor hooked to a WOT switch is my preference because it shifts at FULL line pressure while racing or anytime you are WOT, otherwise its just like stock, plus its free.

you should be able to pass with the y pipe rather easily if you let your car warm up ahead of time.

i dont like the idea of the drop resistor, simply becuase I think its too hard on the tranny, especially with out a tranny cooler. i personally cant risk another 1500$ rebuild.

as jime pointed out the drop resistor mod is free and i paid about 500$, but i think jime's tranny is just a complete hardas freak compared to my 70,000 mile tranny that was apparently made out of noodles and elmers glue.

good luck

I've been thinking about the VB mod and the DR mod a lot lately and the concensus on the DR mod is that it hoses your tranny up pretty bad. unless you're a racer monkey with a tranny cooler the size of your house and a lot of free time to rebuild transmissions, stay away from it.
