The rubber seal thats used to close the brake fluid container ripped. I really need to use my car and now I can't. Can anyone tell me how to properly close it and what is the replacement seal so I can go to nissan tommorow morning and buy one. Please help, thanks.

 

Are you talking about the seal under the cap? You can get a new cap at a Nissan dealer.

 

You can drive the car with that seal broken, there is no pressure in there. It's just a top to a reserve. Put the cap you have on and just get a new one at your local dealer when you get a chance.

It you have a spongy brake pedal, you have air in your system and didn't do the fluid replacement correctly. Don't blamne that on the cap seal, bleed your brakes better.

 

There is no air in the brakes and they feel hard. The problem was I needed to add in some more Dot 3 brake fluiid and I accidently ripped the rubber seal when I was putting it back. I ordered the part from Nissan and it won't get here until Wed., however, I really need to use my car. I did like you said and put the ripped seal back in and the car seems fine, yet I'm a little afraid to drive it. Are you sure everything will be fine if I drive it? Thank You Very Much, David.

 

The seal under the lid, right? Yeah, of course it'll be fine. I believe the only function of that is to create a more airtight seal so that the brake fluid doesn't absorb moisture so quickly. You're not going to have any problems at all. When you press the brake pedal, the brake fluid doesn't press up against the seal. There's no pressure in there. Hell, you could even drive without the lid on at all. The brake fluid will go bad more quickly, but it will still work. Relax, it's no big deal.
