Steering soft and unresponsive ...

Man ... another small issue for my '98. Lately I thought my car has been riding soft, but I thought it was because I've been driving the '01 more than normal. Well today I was banking a soft turn on the veteran's expy (Tampa) at 80-90 and i swear the car stayed straight as I banked. Very bad feeling. I had to slow down (to 60-70MPH) for the car to respond. I know this car's limits and I wasn't even close to them. Also I made a strong 90 deg. left turn leaving work and the car was really struggling.

I don't even know where to start. It wouldn't hurt to mention that I've been needing a CV joint for about a month now. Boot ripped and by now prolly some dirt in there. Please tell me this is probably why the car is handling like this.

Also worth mentioning springs/struts and CV joint on passenger side are all about 3 months old, front driver's tire needs replacing and car has ~80k miles on it. No strange noises either, just poor handling.

what tires are you runin on ???

today i replaced 2 front tires with Falken 512
and ohhh what a world of diferrence !!!!
my 1 year old KUMHO hp716 were making me feel like the car was dancing on ice skates , and in light snow ~ 2" braking always involved full ABS activation.

on top of that my steering was very loose and sloppy - i was contemplating on replacing bushings etc , but now with new tires steering is crisp and tight.
I'm buying 2 more Falkens for the rear, plus they grip very nice in snow (Chicago)

in my opinion now - good set of tires is the best handling upgrade your money can buy.

Nick.

Check your alignment. If the car has to much toe in the car will be great "on center" but will plow into turnes. To much toe out great on the curves but twichy/nervous on center.

But first replace the tire and check the pressure. Falken 512 is a great tire

That's excellent advice and I will do that ASAP (prob next month ... just had to pay for a clutch in the wife's car).

However, that said I have had both a bad alignment and bad tires and never have I felt anything like this. I'm thinking the problem may be worse than that.

Anyone else have any ideas?

If your suspension is moded (mine is) the car is much more sensative to beening out of aligment. I was amazed at the diff between in and out of alignment.

2nd thought what kind of tires do you have now. Do they all match? Are they directional and mounted in the correct direction?

I have S-Tech\Illumina and I guess my car kind of felt like this when I got the springs/struts on now that I really think about it. It was REALLY out of alignment then ... wow. Also ... yes they are all the same and mounted in the right direction. They are Nitto NT450's in stock (16") tire size.

Maybe I can go get my car aligned this weekend ... just not sure I'll have time, but I appreciate all your thoughts. More are welcome!
