Creaky Steering???

Recently, starting 2 days ago my steering started to get real creaky....kinda like a wood floor creaking or like a door creaking. At some points it gets quite loud. I also noticed this happens loudest when I'm at a complete stop or moving at like 1-5 mph. I thought it was my PS, but I checked and no leaks and reservoir is full. It almost sounds as if something isn't lubricated right....can't really explain better than the door or wood creaking. I also noticed an increase in minor "clunking" ...such as on and off the throttle or when going slow. I don't know if its related. I know the creaking is definatly coming from somewhere near the wheels because if i stick my head outside the door I can hear it a lot more and I checked CV's and boots are fine and never had a problem with them. Also, it doesn't matter if the car is on or off, still creaks while turning the wheels. Anyone know what this may be? I hope its not expensive cuz im broke

Have the same thing, its the strut bearings. You gotta take apart the entire suspension and get new ones. Its a pain in the a$$ and its not worth it. The canadian DIY (i forgot the name) website has instructions.

I had the same problem..is it a clunk clunk noise when turning the steering wheel..then definetely it is strut bearings..parts are cheap..labour is about one hour.

Maybe, but i'm more worried about the creaking right now and what I want to know is if the strut bearing causes this?

I just had that problem fixed. My CV (constant velocity) boot (right side) had come off and I needed a new right side CV shaft.

I will say that they told me it was "noisy struts" at first, but that nothing was wrong with them (other than them being "noisy"). I didn't have them fixed, but the new shaft did the job.

I guess check to see if your CV boots are ripped/torn.

resurrecting this thread from the dead like a zombie! seeing if over the years people may have experienced this. I have a 99 max, recently when i am parked and start the car, i kind of hear a groaning noise. I will be completely parked, and when reversing out of the driveway or turning my steering wheel i hear like a "creaking" noise, once i reverse out and don't turn the wheel, i can drive normally and the noise goes away. When i make the first turn after starting the car, it groans, and the second turn as well, but then goes away after that and i can drive just fine. Sounds like its coming from the front passenger side. It recently started a few days ago, it just started getting cold here in tx so i don't know if that makes a difference but it never did it when it was warm. any info you guys might have on this?
