Metal to Metal sound when shifting!!!

I have a 1997 Maxima SE on stick. It has 125000miles on it. Right now when i try to go to the first gear while car is still moving, I can't. Also I feel metal to metal sounds while shifting. Does anybody know if I could do something about it!
Thank you!

First gear has no synchronizers. Don't attempt to go into 1st while moving.

Sure, you could do something about it. Your description of the problem is not detailed enough to troubleshoot. If I were you, I'd take it to someone who knows transmissions and have them listen to/look at the problem.

What do you mean when you say 'metal to metal'? Does it sound as though gears are grinding? Does the shift-lever get violent when this happens?
