Y pipe questions

Just got my Warpspeed Y pipe installed. Installation was freaking $100.
Anyways, When taking off in first hard, I feel like a shudder or some shaking coming from the y pipe.
I saw the muffler place install it and it looked like they did a pretty good job. Is this common?
Also, I'm not really feeling any difference in power. Is it just in my head? I guess I will have to take it to the track to see any real differences.
Has anyone installed a Y pipe, taken it to the track just to realize that their time did not improve?

The install on my car was only $50. A y-pipe doesn't give gains til after 3500rpm. The shudder you feel is probably just the air flowing through the pipe.

Yes, gains begin at around the 3500rpm range. Check out the dynos and you'll see.

Mine cost $0 also. Way to represent Madison Tyler. I can see having someone do more intensive installs like turbo/sc or tranny issues but all you need to do Y-pipe is a socket wrench and some extensions.

Hindsight being 20/20, I still think that I did the right thing to take it to that muffler place. While the car was on the lift, I noticed that there is some oil that is leaking in the front. If I hadn't taken it there, It might have taken a lot longer for me to find this leak. At least now I will take it somewhere to have it looked at.
As for the shudder/shaking, I notice that it only happens when I take off hard on first. When I take it easy, I don't hear anything.

Well since you have a 99, the gains aren't gonna be the same as everyone else's because one pre-cat is still in place

That noise should not last and longer than about 5 days. I had the same thing. At first I had thougt it was a permanent thing, but soon it will wear off.

Can anyone here post the torque specks for the Y-pipe installation? Two areas of concern - where the pipe meets the manifold and at the cat.converter. Want to get the pipe installed right - the first time. I used to have a link for the Chiltons manual on-line but have since lost it. Thanks, Mark V. (MAXIMARK)

I made sure that the muffler place disconnected by negative battery cable before starting work on the y pipe.
That should be enough to reset the ECU, right?

Torque specs as shown in that shown in that wonderful little A32 FSM I downloaded. Manifold=32-37Ib/ft Cat=38-48Ib/ft

It depends how long it was disconnected for. If more then an hour then yes its reset.

So we need to reset the ECU when we install a ypipe (or a CAI) because there are different amounts of air getting to the engine? Is this correct?

I also have a 99 and I am about to install a y-pipe. Is there any way for me to eliminate that other pre-cat? I thought that is what the y-pipe did...eliminate all the pre cats.

And I was also wondering if it was necessary to reset the ECU after y-pipe installation?

Thanks....

Im gonna have to get under my car today when I get off work and see about that extra "precat" cause I dont know where it would be....its gotta be behind the Ypipe near the car if this is the case cause the Ypipe bolts right up to the manifold right? If its back there, then it can be easily removed im sure

I have just not seen one. I mean, I had it up on a lift when I was getting custom b-pipe and midsection done and I didn't see anything but the one stock cat under there. That is why I am thinking that the "pre cats" mentioned might be in the stock y-pipe. I don't know...

I cant seem to find it under there, the Ypipe goes right into the cat, and the pre cats are on the pipe. The only place it could be is where I cant see up and under where the Y attaches. Maybe on a Cali spec car its there, but I think since everyone assumes that 99's and even more so SE-L's are Cali, the gains dont seem to be shown as much, but since we are fed spec

Thats intersting. I was definitely one that assumed that all 99's had a precat attached to the manifold. Thats good to know when it comes to buying another max.

On a side note...

When I installed my CAI, the MAF sensor wasn't connected all the way and caused the check engine light to come on. I immediately took Max to my mechanic and explained what happened. He told me that he could hook the computer to it and run some diagnostics and charge me an Arm and a Leg plus extra to reset it for me... But, he said that if I start the car 15 or 25 times (he wasn't sure which) and run it for about 5-10min each time that the ECU will basically reset itself. Well, needless to say I did the latter... I didn't just take a day to start the car 15 or 25 times over and over again but, after about a week the light went out...or the bulb burt out...

Either way, I haven't had any problems. Just a tid-bit of information.

Why do you guys fu ck aroung so much with the damn ECU reseting methods. It must be too simple to do it the way Nissan wants you to. It takes all of 45 seconds and is free. I see the difficult crowd is stirring as spring is coming.
