Odometer Set Back

Free Carfax link on the General Maxima Forum, check it out.

Anyway, The Carfax reported that on 2/5/03, there was a DMV reading of 159,180. When I bought the car it had 63,600 or so on it in April '03.

What gives? Is there a way to verify myself if the odometer has in fact be rewound or a source clerical error?

Let me know what you guys think and if you know how to check this out.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear man.

159k an now 64k sounds like it could possible be a clerical error. The person who filed it might have added an extra "1" so it might have really read 59k instead of 159k. Never know until you find the source of the problem and fix it

get a real background cheak, if ANY other readings are over your current milage, the guy who sold it is screwed. Look it up man, 100K is worth $20

Check service records if the guy brought it to the dealer. THey ususally record the milage. Look for the dealer perhaps by his house and check the VIN or something.

I thought it may be a clerical error as well...

How does the car look, the brake pedal, matching tires and suspension.

9 year old car with only 60,000 miles. That is less than 7,000 per year. That seems quite low, but I know it is possible.

Does Carfax give any more dates? In NY, the car has to be inspected every year and the mileage is recorded.

Why does the DMV have a recording of mileage? Was it just purchased by that last owner in Feb 03? And why did they sell it only 2 months later? I would be concerned.

Try the dealers in your area like lefty said. Sounds like you might have a good case of fraud. If you like the car, you might be able to get some money back, if not, you can try to get your money back. But good luck trying that. The best you probably can do is have the guy arrested and you would keep your car.

I checked my carfax report last night and it said that there was an error in my odo. It went from 38xxx to about 32xxx but how can that be when I have an electronic odo? Im thinking that it was just some type of clercial error. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

I talked to the guy who I bought the car from. He said he bought it from his boss who mainly just drove the car for his commute and was sole owner before him. The boss was getting a BMW and decided it was time to sell the Max.

The guy I bought the car from had a family with three kids and his family like to go camping, which requires a lot of gear and the Maxima was not big enough.

He wanted to sell it to fix up his rusting caravan with a shot transmission. He bought the car out of necessity but it wasn't big enough for the family.

I would rather have the maxima than a crappy minivan but he had different needs in a car.

I'll try calling up some dealerships around the area to see if anybody remembers this car and milage on it. In Minnesota, license plates stay on the car after the sale which will be easier to pinpoint the car.

Tyrexx - How would another background check help me out? What additional info would it provide?

Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

can't the dealer hook it up and check the "estimated" mileage??? I know that when my mother bought a 94 intrepid with 48K on it in 2003 the dealer hooked it up to a computer and checked. . . the mileage was very close so the dealer said it's the actual mileage... cost me $85 . . . i don't know if nissans have the option...

Is your odometer digital? If not, from what I have heard if you turn the mileage back on a regular odometer that there will be silverish lines between the numbers. Hope this helps. Again I don't know if this is a true statement or not.

Don't they record the milage everytime you go to pass emissions there has to be a way to find that out. You don't wonna be stuck with something you totaly over paid for.

Does anybody know if this is a true statement because I'm not seeing a silver line between the numbers.

FYI: Minnesota does not have emission tests like Illinois does.
