just fixed my brakes and..

Hi,,, I just changed my brake pads and got my rotors resurfaced... while it was on the lift i was looking at the front CV joint and noticed the boot was ripped, thus revealing the acutal joint...

does it really matter that the cv boot is not covering the joint all the way? or should i just put another on there.

don't really want something to possibly get in there and do something harmful.

if it was open for a week or two I would just replace the whole axle from autozone. Since all the dirt and $hit will gradually eat that axle away.

looks kinda like the rubber is dry rotted, but im not to sure.

If the grease is all over the inside of your rim then it is time to replace the whole axle. Better replace the other boot on the opposite side just to be safe.

How easy of a job is it to change out the boot yourself?

I may just change mine even thought it is not ripped jsut to be sure I don't have an expensive repair later.

Is this a good thing to do?

I had both of mine done at a shop for $230. The labor is the same to replace the boot or the entire axle so replace the axle and you won't have to worry about covering up a bad axle. With almost a 100k miles, the axle is probably weak by now so just replace the whole thing.

You went a year without even taking your wheels off? How did you do that? I mean, didn't you change your pads or rotate your tires or anything?

I'd replace the entire axle...might as well do both of them to be safe, it's cheap enough. Go with raxles...just got mine delivered a few days ago, they were 119 for one side and 149 for the other, forgot which one was more expensive. They're supposedly better than stock.
