As the subject states, where are you shifting to get optimum gas mileage? For my daily commute, I try to shift below 2300 rpms for every gear. My car still is not giving me great range on a full tank. I know there are many other factors that come into play with gas mileage, but I am only focused right now on the shifting.

I shift right around 3-3.5k, my car doesn't like being shifted at low rpms...I get about 300-350 per tank at this rate

Well the 18's haven't even gone on the car yet...and they are not exactly boat achors either (18.6 lbs a piece).

Around 3-3.5k as well. That is where I learned to shift, even in my old 86 Subaru station wagon.

How much of that is highway driving? I get about 225 mpg on my auto with mostly city.

shift at like 3- 3.5 this is the optiumum rpm range for cruising for the maxima.. below that you are probably running a little rich on acceleration.. above that the rpms is too fast to get good milage.

i average 22-24 mpg.

look in your owners manual, it tells you when to shift in there.

Not a whole lot of highway around here...so I don't know how your mileage is low. Do you drive aggressively? I do, but it's not that often.

Do you mean 225 miles per tank? If so, that is LOW.

I always try to shift before 3k rpm. I get pretty bad gas mileage. I get like 250-300 on 16 inchers.

Maybe I'll try shifting around 3500 rpm.

I've gone past 100mph in 3rd as well.

For those you that can go over 100mph in 3rd, either you're an automatic or your speedometer is off. It's impossible to any faster than ~96mph in 3rd with the stock rev limiter With my 7000rpm limiter, I can only do ~102mph in 3rd.

As for shift points and MPG, I shift my 1-2 at approximately 4000rpms, the 2-3 at ~3800rpms, and the 3-4 at approximately 3000rpms. A lot of the time I go directly from 2nd to 4th. I tend to play around in 2nd and 3rd quite a lot revving it to 5000-6000rpms a few times a day. I usually get 22mpg with 80% city and 20% highway. I usually get 26-27mpg in straight highway driving.

I get between 300-350 on a tank of 91. And the way I do it is I skip gears. I start out in first or second, and shift to 4th or 5th gear. And don't floor it just give it a second and it gets there. And I just took the car for a spin and I did 100 in 3rd gear????

i used to get almost 400 for the tank with CAI and using mobil 1 synthetic shifting at 2800 or so, but now, after going to non-synthetic and gettin full exhaust and gettin a weird CEL 0305 i think, i barely get to 290, but the weather changed so i dont know what exactly caused it

I pride my self on gas mileage. Within the next few months I will be changing plugs/fuel filter, ripping out stock intake system with dirty air filter and replacing with clean franken car system, replacing stock b/y with aftermarket b/y and cleaning cat. Hopefully with that, and under regular driving, my range per tank will sky rocket. Right now I can get about 340miles (~550km) per fillup if I am lucky and take it right to the low-gas warning light.

Holy crap! I drove 265 miles recently..mostly highway and only used half a tank! I noticed this tonight when I went to the store tonight. Oh and BTW I have 2 codes for my SES light. So...265 x 2 = the other half of my tank is what..about 530 total? All I can say is wow.

That's a very inaccurate way to measure mileage. Here's the best way:

Fill up; reset trip meter; drive a lot; Fill up
Take the mileage on the trip meter and divide by the number of gallons on the 2nd fillup.

If you're really hung up on accuracy, use the same pump for both fillups.

It's a pretty easy calculation. Every 1000rpms in 3rd gear equals 14.9mph. 14.9mph times 6.5 (the stock 6500rpm rev limiter) equals a maximum speed of 96.85mph in 3rd gear. It's impossible to go any faster in 3rd without a raised rev limiter.

At 6500rpms:

1st 37mph
2nd 66mph
3rd 97mph
4th 129mph
5th 153mph

plus the second half of the tank never yields the same as the first half, the fuel gauge is inaccurate

I wouldn't put much faith in measuring that way. The gauge is slow to react. I'm currently at 120 miles and have only used a 1/4 tank. I know for a fact that my car will not be getting 480+ miles on a tank.

Yeah..the best I have actually got was around 400 on a fillup...but it's nice to dream

Pretty good link!

As for the speed, I get different numbers. Again, it all depends on tire inflation.

why does it depends on tire inflation? Are you guys refering to the actual speed the car is going or just what the speedo says? If your saying actual speed, then yeah I see where tire inflation/size comes into play but that would still be an inaccurate equation unless you measured the tires circumfrence when its spinning because I think the tires would balloon a little depending on the rpm.
