Is it bad to go N-) D-) N-) D ...

I've always asked myself if it was bad for the transmission to put the car in neutral when arriving to a light, by doing that, I would put less stress on the brakes and then don't have to keep pressing the brakes when I'm stopped but my question is, is it bad for the trasmission to do that since I have to switch from D to N, then to D a the lights, well not all of them but a few.

The transmission isn't designed to go back and forth between neutral and drive all the time. You're putting a lot of extra wear and tear on the solenoids. Plus brakes are cheap to repalce. Your tranmission isn't. Drive an auto the way it was meant to be driven and just leave it in drive.

That's what I was thinking but wasn't sure, anybody else got an answer?

you put more wear on the tranny by doing that as more parts in the tranny will be moving if it is in neutral rather than remaining in gear.

and like he said brakes are a hell of a lot cheaper than a tranny in every way.

good luck

I put it in N sometimes at the stop lights. Usually when I brake hard, and I put it in N to let off the brake to avoid warping due to uneven cooling at the pad contact point. Or at really long red lights to avoid heat build up in the torque converter. I also feel less vibration with it in Neutral.

You want to put less stress on the brakes($100 for parts) so you decide to put more stress on the tranny($2000 rebuild)? Smart.

there is no wear on the brakes when you are standing still, if you want to let the fronts cool off at the light(since the fronts do all the work) then throw on the e-brake

I don't really do this to avoid wear on the brakes, I do this because I'm a bit lazy and don't wanna keep pressing the brakes when I'm stopped but I guess I'm gonna stop doing this. Thx guys
