Do any 4th Gen's have ABS?

i searched the FAQ's with no luck (unless i missed it). And i know my car 97gxe does not have it, but when i looked on autotrader, a 98 had it advertised. I just would like to know if any of the 4 gen's have them, and what years, and if so, is it on all car's, or is it an option.

its was a stand alone option on all 4th gens, but did not become standard till the 5th gens

A stand alone option on all years of 4 th gens, But it was like 999 dollars, so it was pretty pricey. Probably most likely on GLEs or SEs, though I remember seeing ~30K GLEs with sunroofs, but no ABS ordered, on dealer lots in 1999

I wish my 97 had it, I will eventually try and convert to ABS. My 92 has it and I can tell a big difference in the braking and I believe the 3rd and 4th gens both have the same brakes, I am about 95% sure of that and I know the 4th gen is like 100lbs lighter so that has to be the reason for the better braking. I know that ABS equipped Maxs have bigger master cylinders also.

It is right hand side on the top corner. it is like cylinder box with some metal tube going into it, its like four of them (For the four wheels). Also when there is snow or ice on the road and you break you feel machine gun under your feet. And it makes this wired noise and you know you are not skidding.

my 95 se has almost every option cept ABS. And it was sold in MI, what kind of sense does that make. We get a boat load of snow about 4-5months a year.

converting to ABS would be expensive as hell. might as well buy a maxima with ABS.

If you've got ABS, then you'll have a light come up on your dash. Unless all have this light, with or with out (which would be misleading if so).

Anyway, here in New Zealand, all 4th gens came with ABS standard, airbags, how ever were optional, as mine does not come with any

Actually the reason NOT to have ABS is for ice and snow. Obviously you can maintain control on slippery surfaces more easily with ABS, but the overall stopping distance is supposed to be shorter on snow and ice when you are able to lock up the wheels.

Yup...ABS was an option on my 98 SE...I don't have it though. I didn't want it at the time, but it may have saved me from a fender bender in which I didn't modulate quickly enough. If I had it to do over again I would probably get it.

It's NOT standard on the GLE. I have owned both a '96 and '98 GLE. Neither had ABS.

yeah, most of what people misunderstand about ABS is that they think it makes you stop quicker and shorter. Not necessarily. It might make you stop more quickly, if you are in a skid or something, but it may not. What it does, however, is help you to maintain control in a harsh braking situation and still be able to steer. It would have been very helpful to have in a couple of my wrecks over the years.

Why not just go to a parking lot and jam on the brakes...my GF drove around for months wondering if she had abs...I'm like...just jam on the brakes in a safe location and see...
