EVAP System

I have a 97 GLE that had the service engine soon light come on. I just got it back from the dealer who claims that the codes show the knock sensor needs to be replaced and that the EVAP purge flow monitor needs to be replaced. They want over $400 to replace the knock sensor and $700 to replace the EVAP part. The car is not having any problems and is running awesome - considering nearly 183K miles! I did replace the transmission in September and love the car. I'm just getting sick of replacing BS parts. Called around for other estimates on both - other Nissan dealers are the same price - bummer!
Can anyone tell me the significance of the EVAP purge flow monitor - the dealer attempted to explain but it didn't add up - and why I need to replace this first, rather than replace the knock sensor first?
Thanks!
