need help with removing starter

I need to regrease my starter because its making noises and it might be close to going. I am having trouble removing the 17mm bolt (bolt closest to the firewall). Its not stripped, its just too tight. I tried uses my torque wrench but that didnt work. Im going to go pick up a breaker bar at Pepboys after school tomarrow and see if I can get it loose...I dont think its going to work, theres not much room. Anyone have any other ideas?

i had to hook additional open end wrench to the one on the bolt and that should give u the leverage and strength

Get a long enough breaker bar and you should be able to get it. I just fixed mine and am very glad to get rid of sound it was making on start up. BE VERY CAREFUL when retightening the two skinny bolts that hold the starter motor to the starter assembly. The torque specs are very light for these bolts (check the FSM), but I didn't find that out until I broke one of them.

Ok...that one's torqued to 75 foot-lbs...so, yeah...it's in there.

You tried using a 'torque wrench' to get it off? Why would you do this?

Get the breaker bar...or, if don't want to blow the dough and you have a floor jack, put the jack-handle over a socket wrench for more leverage. You should be able to get it out that way.

My 17mm bolt took over 200 ft-lb to remove. The bolt thread was very clean, so I think Nissan overtighten it at the factory. The torque should be around 75 fb-lb. Anyway, use a long 1/2" breaker bar, and a 1 1/2" extension to get some room.
