Catback question

I have a newbie question for you guys, what is the real difference between a catback and a muffler? I'm thinking that the catback removes the existing cat and just has a straight tubing from the y to the catback??? Or is it just the catback connects to the existing cat??? Also is reallly that noticable of gains to spend that much cash for a catback?

First, a catback and a muffler at talking about two totally different things. A catback is referring to replacing the stock catalitic converter-all-the-way-back to the muffler(usually including the muffler.). The muffler is the thing that you see your tailpipes on...the little oval thing that keeps your car from being too loud....thus the name.

Well, it is not worth the hundreds of dollars that you will spend for the few hp gains that you get from a catback that these companies sell. YOu can replace a few things with the majority of the gains still being taken advantage, while the savings on your checkbook are enormous. **Get a y-pipe...no question!!!

Take a look at these threads, and you will learn a lot.:

From what I understand a cat-back does NOT remove the catalytic converter. It is just evrerything after the catalytic converter, including the muffler. That is my understanding of a cat-back and information I have read.

A cat back has nothing to do with the catalytic converter. It is the exhuast from behind the cat to the muffler, which would include the b-pipe and muffler.

I know, all I was saying is that most people that get a new catback system, go ahead and get a high flow cat. Sorry, I was not clear enough on that.
