Hi all. This is my first post so here goes: My Maxima idles at ~1300 RPMs when it's warm and I'm stopped at a light. Hitting the accelerator brings it back down to normal. The dealer couldn't find the problem and blamed it on my JWT POP (which I doubt). Anyone else had this problem? How do you fix it? Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

umm

you are hurting your car...maybe not
but
if you start your car cold, give it like 2 minutes before you drive it
the ECU sets the idle a bit high a few minutes after the car start.
If you have to drive, don't rev it.
be gentle.
the reason the idle is high initially is because the ecu tells the engine to warm up, reducing wear and tear.
Having the engine warmed up not rolling is different then having it warmed up as you roll.
If your car idle erratically even when your car is warm...then something is messed up with your temp sensor, I think.
but if it is just when you start the car, give her time to warm up and be gentle.

Re: umm

Actually, I'm not gunnin' it cold or anything. This idle problem happens sporadically, and even after I've been driving for a while, it'll idle at ~1300 when I'm stopped. Tapping on the accelerator brings it back down to normal. Hope that clears up my problem a bit. Somebody mentioned once that setting the TPS (or something like that) to 45 Ohms to 4500 Ohms WOT would fix the problem?? Anyone know what that means? Thanks.

My 95 does the same thing...

though I have not taken it to the dealer yet. It did it alot for a while, and now it hardly ever does it anymore. I have a manual tranny, and it is annoying when it happens because you can't slip it into N when you slow below 1000 rmp at a light. Let me know it you figure it out...

So yours slowed down? I'll wait to see if mine gets any better. It doesn't affect the performance any, it's just annoying. If anyone still has any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks.

After cleaning the TB and making sure that the cooloant hoses were connected, I decided that this must be a failure on either the TPS or the Idle solenoid.
I checked the TPS first. This was the culprit. The TPS tells the ECU the position of the throttle by varying the resistance in the circuit. (It's actually a potentiometer) When you connect a multimeter (must be analog) to the contacts at the center and the pass. side, you should read about 500 ohms at idle. WOT (wide open throttle) should read 4500 to 5000 ohms. Also the transition between the two extremes should be smooth on the analog dial of the multimeter (should not jump around).
I found that my TPS wasn't bad, but rather not adjusted properly, to where at idle, the multimeter read 9000 ohms...at just above idle, it dropped to 500 ohms, then climbed smoothly to 5000 ohms at WOT. All I had to do was to loosen the two screws that hold (and adjust) the TPS, and rotate about 2mm. Voila! Now my max idles like a dream.
I'm not saying that this is the problem that your car is having, but it is quite easy to check.
If my description of the procedure doesn't make sense to you, go check out a Hanes manual at AZ or Pepboys....

Hope this helps you guys out.

I know that one of you e-mailed me directly about this, but I din't have the time to respond, and ended up forgeting about it. I appologize. I was being a putz.

Later,

Mad Jap

Thanks. My brother's friend is a Nissan mechanic so I'll have him check it out.
