New to the Forum and Maxima's! Wanted to say hi since i've been peeking around.
SubscribeGot my Maxima 3 months ago . Moved up from a Civic (thank goodness, not knocking on anyone) Wanted to say hello to the community and see what you all had to think on starting mods. (exhaust,intake,wires/plugs,rims, front/rear/fog lights.) Max's are far different from Civic's. I Was hesistant to post ,seems to be pretty strict in some areas. Here's a couple pic's of my car, a little close but I still love it
Hopefully i didn't just break a rule. *looks around cautiously*

welcome to the org....most people would tell u for ur first mods to go with......
~~some sort of intake--from ebay about 50 $
~~Y pipe....best bang for the buck--u can get them from warpspeed for around 160 if the group deal is still up.
~~The definitive UDP--from the group deal 80$ without belts, with belts 120$
~~warpspeed cat-back exhaust--250

Well, Since my bonus check, pay check, and income tax all come in on the same day, I think shopping day is in order. Think I'm going to start with Full Exhaust, Springs, Cold Air Intake, and new front's/rear's/and fog's lamps, b/c lights don't look good w/o a blue or purple tinge :P May get a new fuel rail to go with my wires and plugs. Party on the inside, business on the outside, so bodymods will stay simple, except for the rims, those gotta go. Those should happen in the new few weeks so I'll be warming up my dig camera.

ok. welcome to the .org...... maximas don't use spark plug wires. they have a coil-on-plug design. no need or call for an aftermarket fuel rail, so scratch that one too. stick with the stock plugs as well. start with good spring/strut combo, and a y-pipe/ catback.
I'm grew up in athens, and currently don't live too far away. there's a couple .org members from athens also, so be sure to come to some of the meets and learn all you can

Thanks all for the correction. Like I said, new to the Maxima scene (ask me any question about a Civic, I know it.....not a proud fact! LOL) I've been eyeing the Stillen website but their gains aren't much greater than the forementioned DMS and Warpspeed products(since stillen decided to leave out the gains :| ). Glad to hear that there are some close members. I was beginning to wonder if everyone in Athens drove a Caprice and no Maxima in sight......scary. Question about the Cat though, not sure if I just missed the descrip on the site or there's just a product/cost table?
like william said above this link should answer all your questions about what mods are available for the max and from where.

hey guys, im new to the forums too.
My parents bought our maxima new in 97. Now that im in college, they gave it to me.
ive been a maxima fan for a while now. I wanted the maxima in highschool but my parents thought it was too much power for me
so they gave me a 96 corolla.
anyway, right now its completely stock, except for a new headunit and rear speakers, but hopefully not for long.

When Thursday of next week rolls around I'll get to ordering. Like what I saw with the UDP and Y-Pipe , wasn't sure about the Warpspeed CatBack, any opinions?
Congrats, that is a big step up, you will really love this car if you treat it right.
First I would not worry about mods. I don't know how many miles are on the car or if the previous owner took care of it (do you know them?) so my first bit of advice would be to make sure the car is in good working order.
If it has over 60,000 miles and you have no records of the previous owners care, I would reccomend new belts (check these) fuel filter, spark plugs, transmission flush (very easy to do, check the lubricant forums, go with a quality synthetic fluid) PCV valve and of course the normal oil change. If you go with a non-synthetic go with Castrol GTX, if you go synthetic go Mobil 1 5W 30 in winter and 10W 30 in summer if you have a lead foot. Get the Nissan OEM oil filter for the 4th gen, this is about the best bang for the buck and I believe there is only one oil filter that is superior (but costs twice as much, again you can find all of this in the lubricants forum. While under the car check the oil pressure switch. It will be at the rear of the oil pan. If there is oil on it wipe it off, the next time you change your oil see if any more oil has collected on the sensor, if so you will need to change it. Check out motorvate.ca for details on this (it is a common problem on 4th gens, it will cause you to slowly lose oil) If you plan on getting an intake soon obviously you don't want to spend $50.00 on a K&N drop in so get a generic paper filter or slap an intake on.
Other than that if you are over 100,000 miles I would say to clean out the engine with Auto-Rx, and the fuel system with BG fuel system cleaner. This should give you a solid foundation and an engine that should purr like new. If you know the car has been well cared for and has in fact had 60k service move onto the next stage. A well maintenanced car will run better than one that has been neglected even if it has mods.
Now for the mods. Get a Y-pipe first. This will give you the best initial gains. After that I would go with some KYB GR-2 struts and a good spring like progress or eibach (GR-2's are basically AGX's set on level 2, if you don't autocross save yourself some money) that will give your car a clean drop, ride like it is stock, and corner like a new car (don't forget the bump stops/dust boots.) A used intake for sale here on the forums would be my next step. Filters are easy to clean so there is no reason to buy new. By now you will be blowing B16 bolt ons away and loving life. You could get a low back pressure muffler to add a little chrome where nissan should have and also pick up a couple of hp. Don't get too serious though, because in at least a year you will be craving boost so start saving up for that. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me

WoW! I don't know the previous owners , no. And there weren't any records that came with it. I know the gentlemen that sold me the car really well, and he said he'll service the car for free since he screwed up on sending off my money from my trade in, so he owes me 900 bucks. Looks like tomorrow i'm going to go in and do a few things. As far as I can tell the car runs great except for this odd sound coming from the front passenger side, happens mostly when I turn and sounds like ......well......if I could make the sound, i would. Sounds like bearing rubbing almost. NOt sure if that is common or what, so i'll get that looked at. And luck would have it that 2 weeks ago I was going home when I noticed u HUMONGO dent in my fender, think some Door Ding Gnome came and whacked my car....anywho, off topic but I'll look into the oil sensor . As for miles, it's sitting at 93k, so it's due soon. Thanks for the tons and tons of help Reeper.
Does the sound mostly come on when turning at low speed, <10mph? If yes then it's a strut bearing. If it happens during higher speeds it's the whee bearing.
Awesome, been wondering what that sound was. Nothing like cruises with the ladies when that sound starts......gotta slow it waaaay down :P I'll look into the struts tomorrow. Thanks Big D.

if you see grease or little tears I'll bet that is the problem
