Yes it only took 10 minutes to change . Had my wife reach in there after it was unbolted . Tiny hand = easy

 

hey , can you tell me the part number and price of a knock sensor ? im about to do mine and my friend says he can get a deal if i get him the part number

 

Part number is 30P00 I believe, and I just got mine for $160 at the dealership. You can find em online for $130, or on Ebay for around $100.

 

I did it, but cut myself up pretty good doing it. I would trust motorvate's instructions anyday. I used a 1/4" drive ratchet and 12mm socket (or is it 10mm?). Also its a good idea to bend the corner of the metal gasket (intake manifold or head gasket..I cant remember) because this is what cuts you up to shreds.

 

how did you tighten the top bolt correctly - the directions say to tighten between 15-20 ft/lbs torque.. or did you just guess it?

 

My 13 yo daughter with her tiny hands did it successfully. Credit goes to her.

 

did it myself. Used a craftsman 12mm angle socket or something like that and a long extension. About a 20 minute job with the right tools and a helper with a small hand.

I did, it took maybe 20 minutes. Just used an extension and a swivel socket.

 

The key to changing it is to get a girl with small hands to help. I had my little sisters friend position the new knock senor and get the bolt started. Her hands were so small it was easy for her. She didn't even get a scratch.

 

I did it, took about30 minutes, 5 to take out and 25 to put the new one in, i finaly used some scotch tape for the screw to sit in the socket and put it in. No cell, well at leastnot for knock sensor.

 

I read all these posts about people cutting up their hands while replacing their knock sensors or other parts. Get a pair of MECHANIX GLOVES! THey're worth the $17 - $20.

 

its very easy to do. i changed mine in 20 mins and got no cuts (ive got small hands i guess).

 

What are Mechanix Gloves are where do you get them?

 

Just to keep this thread "right", I tried. It took my one hour and several cuts with the right tools and I still DIDN'T get it. So, be prepared for it not to work.

p.s. I have big hands.

I'll try it again in a few weeks.

 

Got mine at Autozone. They are gloves made specifically for working on cars. You can even get some that have Kevlar protection for extremely hot parts etc. They are snug fitting and the material is thin enough to permit good "feel", but still offer protection.

i put duct tape on the back of my hand, dindt get cut up, just one small scratch, motorvate or skippy.net instructions, took 20 minutes with the right tools, 12 mm swivel from sears and a 10 inch extension and a ratchet, use a telescopic magnet so that you dont drop the screw let the car cool before you start otherwise youll get scorched

 

skippy.net seems 2 have the best writeup for the knock sensor gonna install mine soon with the telescopic magnet and extenson

 

How do you now when it's time to change. I have no cel, but some people say it still might be bad.

 

do you know how to pull ECU codes?its on the sticky on top of the 4th gen forum. also check out the implications and symptoms of a bad sensor, or a partially working sensor, i saw huge loss in gas mileage, about 6 mpg decrease from 20-14 sometimse 13 mpg, itll throw a code of 03 04, it ddoesnt give off a CEL, i only checked because i saw a huge decrease in gas mileage

 

I use an old pair of batting gloves from high school

 

It took me 30-45 min. I did not have anything close to the right tools and I still have scars from when I did it. I did it about 4-5 months ago. Its not hard with the right tools though.

Here's my secret for no special tools use a short ratchet w/ 12mm socket and push it with a flat-head screwdriver on the engine block for leverage to break the bolt (there is a drilled out indent to stick the fleat head part into).

the rest not too bad if you have medium or smaller hands.

well I just did it yesterday finally! I seemed to be on time with the average - about 30 minutes. And sure enough my hands are all scratched up. Seriously it felt like I was navigating my rachet through a jungle of razor blades down there.
But its in, and it's wonderful, and my car feels like an entirely new car to drive.

 

I checked ECU last night to see if I needed a new KS, but it gave me code......0505.....which means everything is okay. should I still pick one up for later, or just wait until that time comes?

 

Yeah I got my 0505 too, i was stoked. If you have around 100k miles, thats about the time the KS goes bad. So if you can find a deal now, I'd get one.
