Injen Intake & Y Pipe Too loud?

I'm new to this site, just bought my max 1week ago (99 SE auto). I want to try the injen CAD on my car with a y-pipe(budget or warpspeed?), my concern is that they will be too loud. This car is my family car and I don't want it too sound extreme. I currently have a cat back that is fairly mellow, low sounding and I will keep my stock cat. Does anyone have this combination, if so how does it sound and which pipe is best?

It won't be too loud, you be fine.

with injen CAI and aftermarket y-pipe, before 3,000rpm it'll sound like stock. after 3,000rpm your intake will take over and ur engine will sound like a domestic V8.

Well, I wouldn't go that far

I can only speak for my PR CAI, but as far as I know they all act the same (sound-wise). The sound varies with pedal pressure. If you go WOT, it will growl very loudly after ~3k. On the other hand, you can accelerate lightly all the way to redline and sound (pretty much) stock.

That's why I love the thing; My car sounds kick-***, but I can make it sound stock when I want.

It depends on the order in which you get them, I'd imagine.

If you did the y-pipe first, you'd be saying the exhaust was loud. When I put the y-pipe on my car (stock exhaust, otherwise) I could barely notice it; there was a very light grumble down around idle.

Now...does a complete exhaust (y/catback) make the car sound like a V8? I'm guessing no, but I'd get a cat-back if it did.

You won't even notice it unless you drive hard. If you drive like I do when my family's in the car, you wont know it's there.

I have the OBX catback (which quiets down after you get it)-- I still like it, but would like it to be a little louder--- would it be a whole lot louder if I added a y-pipe?

yes it will be louder than most since the OBX is one of the louder cat backs, even with the 2 resonators it's louder than my WS.

the intake alone is not bad at all. Even with a cat-back not to bad for a family car, the y-pipe changes that quite a bit. When people hear my car, they do a double take because it sounds like I have a powerful tuned beast under the hood, and I look stock, but 3 mods 22-30hp= a big ol' smile

Take the catback off, and a y-pipe and intake will give you a great power increase while maintaining a nice exhaust not that will not irritate people. Put them on with the catback and it will be loud and impractical for family use. Although that does depend on your family. :-D

poor mans cai(drilled airbox)

I did the custom drilled airbox this weekend to my '99 i30t. Seems to have a little more low-mid range power and sounds great if I get on it. But it costs nothing and I've read that it does the same as a CAI.
Just got the car 2 weeks ago, I love it and the next mod is springs.

I agree, that catback owns you on sound levels. The intake will only be loud under hard acceleration, but the Y pipe w/ a catback will be loud. Especially since you are auto, droning. Depends on which catback you have as to just how loud it will be though. IF you have a stillen muffler, you are screwed cause it's going to be quite loud.
