GLE will say on the back

SE if it has a spoiler, five star wheels, fog lights, leather wrapped steering wheel, and body color door handles.

GXE is similar to a GLE, but without leather and other nice options.

they all have the same engine... the SE hasa sportier suspension, comes with nicer rims, painted door handles, a spoiler and fogs, and white face guages... the GXE is the base that comes with nothing standard.. the GLE comes with leather, bose system, wood grain console, and chrome door handles. as far as performance, they are really the same except if you get a 5 speed, and the 5 speed isnt available on the GLE only the GXE and the SE

Look under the hood

This information comes from the '99 Maxima factory service manual.

Raise the hood. Look for a shiny metal identification tag fastened to the
passenger side of firewall. The top row is the Vehicle Identification
Number, starting with J. The second row is model information. The first
five characters are BLHUL. The sixth character is the trim level designator:
E = GXE
G = GLE
V = SE

you can get pretty much anything you want on any model, you just have to pay to get it done... i had an aftermarket spoiler put on my GLE, you can get fogs put in, you can get an SE with leather, the SE comes with a spoiler though, i never heard of anyone wanting to take off the spoiler it makes the car look a lot better.. but if you wanted im sure you could take it off and patch the holes.. e mail me at Joewitthamaxima@aol.com if you have any more questions

D.Martin..correct

Mr. Martin is absolutely correct. THese days people can modify a car to appear as a different trim level. The only way to truly know a car's make, model and trim level is to check the VIN (vehicle Identifation number). It's found in several places, on the top of the dash (drivers side), on the side of the driver's door, and under the hood.

hard to tell

My buddy has a 98 GXE, and it came with all the nice toys except spoiler, leather and foglight. He had the leather wheel, white gauges etc. It is called a convinience package. I have a 98 SE, it comes with EVERYTHING you can want in a car.
A GLE comes with regular rims, while an SE has 5 star rims.
But I have seen GLE with 5star as well, so I think you should just check the VIN for it.
I say go for an SE.

Uh-oh

Uh-oh. Misunderstanding. With the 4Gen Maxima, GXE/SE/GLE is not indicated anywhere in the Vehicle Identification Number. It appears on the Vehicle Identification Plate which is riveted to the engine compartment firewall. The Model information appears directly below the VIN.

SE always comes with a spoiler.
You can get a spoiler put on any car, but the body matched door handles are one of the dead give-aways for an SE. You can get an SE loaded like a GLE, but the suspension, steering wheel, and rims are going to be different on the SE.

You shouldn't have any trouble determining what model it is. BTW, if you add a spoiler to a GLE or GXE, the extra light in the back window is still there, or a plastic plate to cover the hole (if it was removed)

Don't worry, you'll eventually learn.

CHeck the title

The vehicle's title will state the model types. As long as the contract states a 98 Maxima SE (or whatever year and model the delaer alleges) you are legally protected.

I bought a 96 SE last year, which seems to have every available option except leather seats.

I got the alloy 7 spoke wheels, Bose CD/Cass, power driver seat, sport gauges, leather warpped wheel and shifter, wing, fogs, seat heaters, sunroof, yada yada...

Does this come under the Comfort & Convenience package?

How can I research the options that existed in 96?

Not in my state. In fact, my title doesn't even say Maxima. It just says 1999 Nissan and the Vehicle Identification Number.

Same here, no model, only a VIN, and the title says black , not green. Funny thing is is that DMV in NY said that I could put any color I wanted in there. BTW, for the early 4th Gens, the GLEs come with something that hte SE and GXEs don't. Its a push in/glide out door/compartment abouve the radio. I believe its a pull out drawer in the GXEs and SEs.
