How in the hell do you check the fluid in the 5-speed tranny on a 97 nissan maxima I think I might have tranny probs, I get a bad grinding when in gear only on right turns and straight not on left turns, anyone please help me

I would suspect a bad left or right CV joint. But to check the tranny level, jack up the car perfectly level and then unscrew the upper drain plug(for lack of a better word) It should either slightly drain out or if you stick your finger in there, it should be just below the drain opening hole.

check both of your cv joint boots to see if there is any cracks or if you have lost any grease (none should be visible). Although cv joints tend to make a clicking sound when they go bad, you can at least rule those out.

One time when installing NEW BOOTS, I must have phaucked up and got a hairline crack in my boot because about 2 weeks later I noticed that my rim was dirty as heel. I torn my MF BOOT!! Anyway, did you notice this noise after the spring install or was it allready there? If it happened afterwards, check to see if you pulled a dch95!

Really no way to check your manual tranny fluid levels as Nissan intends it to stay put for the life of the vehicle. I put in Redline MT-L and notie a huge diff...

But unless you see leakage, your fluid is ok. The other members opinions about your cv, etc... sound on point.

Re: Upper drain plug = fill plug

Oh yeah. I forgot because I don't use that plug to fill the tranny anymore. It's too much of a pain. I just undo the speed sensor and use a long hose w/ a funnel. WAY faster and WAY easier. Espeically when you pre-measure the amount first.
